1 Corinthians 1:18 (NIV)

Verse of the Day

1 Corinthians 1:18 (NIV)
“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”

Devotional Reflection

Paul does not rush past the tension in this verse. He names it clearly: the very center of our faith – the cross of Jesus – will look foolish to many.

We feel that tension in quiet ways, too. You may carry a deep love for Christ in your heart, yet notice how strange it can sound in certain conversations, workplaces, or even family circles. The cross does not always make sense to the watching world.

Paul tells us why. There are two very different ways of seeing the same reality. To those who are perishing, the cross looks like failure, weakness, and loss. But to those who are being saved, the same cross shines as the power of God.

It is like standing in front of a power line. To one person, it is just a plain metal pole and a few wires. Ordinary. Unimpressive. To another person, who understands what flows through those wires, it is a steady current of life, light, and warmth for homes and families. Nothing about the outside changes, but the understanding does.

The cross is like that. On the surface, it is a story of a man rejected, condemned, and crucified. It does not dazzle. It does not flatter our pride. It does not promise quick success. Yet beneath that seeming foolishness runs the deepest power the world has ever known: the power of God to forgive, to cleanse, to reconcile, to heal, to raise the dead.

Notice the phrase Paul uses: “to us who are being saved”. That is gentle wording. It reminds you that salvation is not only a past moment but also an ongoing work. You have been saved, and you are being saved. God is still working the power of the cross into all the corners of your life.

There may be areas in your story where you feel weak, ashamed, or painfully unfinished. Old wounds, nagging fears, disappointments that still sting. In those places, the cross can feel distant or insufficient, especially when you measure yourself by the world’s standards of strength and success.

Yet Paul invites you to see your life through this verse. The message of the cross is not a slogan to decorate your faith; it is the living power of God at work in your real struggles, right now. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead is quietly, faithfully at work in the places you most fear are beyond repair.

For some, that power looks like dramatic change. For many, it looks like daily grace – the strength to forgive again, to get up again, to pray when your heart feels heavy, to keep trusting when answers are slow.

This also means you do not have to prove the wisdom of the cross to everyone around you. You may long for loved ones to understand your faith, but Paul reminds us that apart from God’s work, the cross will seem foolish. Your calling is not to make the cross impressive; it is to rest in its power, even when others do not see what you see.

Think of one place in your life right now that feels particularly weak or confusing. Maybe it is a relationship where you cannot find the right words, a health concern that lingers, or a private grief others have forgotten. Bring that specific place before this verse: “to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” The cross stands over that very situation.

Because of the cross, you are not defined by your failures. Because of the cross, you are not abandoned in your suffering. Because of the cross, you are not left to carry your sin, shame, or sorrow alone. The world may not understand why you cling to a crucified Savior, but heaven knows: in Him, the power of God is holding you fast.

Let this verse free you from having to appear strong all the time. The heart of our faith is not our strength reaching up to God, but God’s strength reaching down to us through the apparent weakness of the cross. In that quiet, strange, beautiful place, His power meets you where you are.

Quiet Prayer

Lord Jesus, I confess that I do not always see or feel the power of the cross in my everyday life. Yet Your Word tells me that in Your sacrifice, the power of God is at work in me. Help me to trust Your wisdom when Your ways seem hidden or misunderstood by others. Let the message of the cross shape how I see my weakness, my pain, and my hope. Keep me close to You, resting quietly in what You have already finished.

Quick Next Step

Today, write the words, “The cross is the power of God in my life” on a small card or note, and place it somewhere you will see it often (by the sink, on your desk, or beside your bed) as a gentle reminder to anchor your thoughts in this truth throughout the day.
