1 Corinthians 8:6 (NIV)

Verse of the Day

1 Corinthians 8:6 (NIV)
“Yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.”

Devotional Reflection

Paul’s words are simple and steady: there is one God, the Father, and one Lord, Jesus Christ. All things come from Him. We exist for Him. Our life flows through Christ and is held together by Him.

Before we rush to apply this verse, it helps to let it rest over us. One God. One Lord. From whom are all things. For whom we exist. Through whom we exist. These are not ideas to master, but truths to lean our whole weight upon.

So much of your daily life pulls you in different directions. Responsibilities, expectations, unspoken pressures, and the quiet ache of things that have not turned out as you hoped. It can feel as though you are being asked to live for many different “lords” at once.

But this verse gently gathers you back to the center. You do not exist for the approval of everyone around you. You do not exist to meet every need, fix every problem, or carry every burden alone. You exist for God.

Imagine a room full of radios all tuned to different stations. News, talk, music, static, everything competing for attention. Your mind and heart can feel like that some days, every voice insisting it is the most important. But when you quietly turn the dial to one clear signal, the noise fades, and a single voice can be heard.

This verse is that clear signal. It tells you whose voice is ultimate: the one God, the Father, and the one Lord, Jesus Christ. Every other voice in your life is secondary. Some are helpful, some are not, but none of them created you, none of them sustain you, and none of them define your worth.

Paul says that all things are “from” the Father and “for” Him. That includes your story-both the parts you gladly share and the ones you barely whisper in prayer. Your personality, your gifts, your limitations, your season of life, your relationships, your quiet offerings that no one else sees-these are held in the hands of the One from whom you came and for whom you exist.

When you feel restless or dissatisfied, this verse invites a gentle question: “Who am I living for right now?” Not in a scolding way, but as an honest check of the heart. Have the expectations of others become my center? Have my own fears or ambitions taken the first place that belongs to God alone?

Then Paul lifts our eyes to Jesus: “one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.” The same Jesus who walked dusty roads, touched the sick, noticed the overlooked, and wept at a graveside is the One through whom your life is upheld today.

It means your life is not random. You are not drifting through your days unsupported. Right now, in the ordinary details of your schedule and the quiet corners of your heart, you are being kept by Christ. He is the One through whom you live, move, and draw your next breath.

Perhaps you feel tired of trying to hold everything together: family tensions, health concerns, financial questions, aging parents, adult children, or simply the weight of the passing years. This verse does not deny those realities. It simply reminds you of a deeper one: you are not the one holding the universe, or even your own life, together. Christ is.

There is also comfort here for the places of regret and loss. If all things are from God and for Him, and through Christ we exist, then even the seasons that feel wasted or broken are not outside His reach. He can weave them into a story that is ultimately for His glory and for your good, even if you cannot yet see how.

This truth does not erase grief or simplify complex situations. But it does mean you can bring your confusion, your questions, and your weariness to a Father who made you and loves you, and to a Lord who gave Himself for you and sustains you.

Today, you do not have to solve everything. You do not have to be everything. You can quietly remember: there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom I exist. There is one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom I exist.

Let that be enough for this moment. Let it steady your breathing and soften your shoulders. The same God who spoke galaxies into being knows your name and your needs. The same Lord who calmed the storm is with you in what feels unsettled today.

You belong to Him. You were made for Him. And He is not careless with what belongs to Him.

Quiet Prayer

Father, thank You that You are the One from whom all things come and for whom I exist. Lord Jesus, thank You that my life is held together through You. Gently loosen my grip on the things and opinions I have been living for, and draw my heart back to its true center in You. Teach me to rest in the truth that I belong to You and that my days are safely in Your hands. Let this assurance quiet my soul before You now.

Quick Next Step

Write 1 Corinthians 8:6 on a small card or in a note on your phone, and sometime today pause for one slow minute to read it aloud, emphasizing the words “for whom we exist” and “through whom we exist,” letting those phrases settle into your heart.
