Genesis 1:23
And there was evening, and there was morning, the fifth day.
Genesis 1:23 marks the close of the fifth day of creation. It’s a simple statement, easy to overlook. But tucked inside this verse is a truth that matters deeply when you’re waiting: God works within rhythms. He works within time. And He completes what He begins.
This verse doesn’t tell you what happened next. It doesn’t rush ahead to the sixth day. It simply marks the close of what was, and the trust that what comes next is already planned.
Quiet Prayer
Lord, I confess that waiting is hard for me. I want to see the full picture now, to know how the story ends. But You work in days, in seasons, in rhythms I cannot control. Teach me to trust that You are still creating, still moving, still faithful even when I cannot see the next step. Help me rest in the knowledge that Your timing is not a delay. It is part of the design. Amen.
Devotional Reflection
We live in a world that hates waiting. We can skip ahead in shows, order food in minutes, and expect answers before we’ve finished asking the question. But faith doesn’t work that way. Faith operates inside time, inside process, inside seasons that unfold one day at a time.
Genesis 1:23 reminds us that God Himself worked within the structure of days. He didn’t rush creation. He didn’t collapse the process into a single moment, even though He could have. Instead, He worked with intention and purpose. Each day had a beginning and an end. Each day had its own work. And each day was declared good before the next one began.
When you’re in a waiting season, it can feel like nothing is happening. You pray, you trust, you obey, and yet the circumstances don’t shift. The door doesn’t open. The answer doesn’t come. In those moments, it’s easy to wonder if God has forgotten, if He’s delayed, or if you’ve somehow missed His timing.
But Genesis 1:23 offers a different perspective. God’s work is not measured by how quickly it arrives. It’s measured by faithfulness within the day you’re in. The fifth day had its own purpose. It wasn’t incomplete just because the sixth day hadn’t come yet. It was exactly what it needed to be.
The same is true for you. The season you’re in right now is not wasted time. It’s not a delay. It’s part of the unfolding. God is working in ways you cannot see, preparing things you cannot yet understand, and holding the next step in His hands.
Think of a farmer planting seeds. After the seeds go into the ground, there’s a long stretch of time where it looks like nothing is happening. The field is still. The soil is silent. But beneath the surface, roots are forming. Growth is happening. The harvest is being prepared even though it’s not visible yet.
You are in that in-between space. You’ve planted the seed of faith. You’ve trusted God with your situation. And now you’re waiting for what comes next. But just because you can’t see the growth doesn’t mean it’s not happening. God is still at work. He hasn’t paused. He hasn’t forgotten. He is moving in the rhythm He established from the beginning.
Waiting doesn’t mean you’re stuck. It means you’re being held in a season that has its own purpose. When the evening comes and the morning follows, you’ll be able to look back and see that this day mattered too.
Trusting God in the meantime isn’t about pretending everything is fine. It’s about believing that He is faithful even when the timeline doesn’t make sense to you. It’s about resting in the knowledge that He completes what He starts. It’s about letting go of the need to control the pace and choosing instead to walk faithfully through the day in front of you.
God didn’t skip the fifth day to get to the sixth. He didn’t rush past the process to arrive at the result. He honored the rhythm. He worked within time. And He invites you to do the same.
You don’t have to see the whole picture to trust the One who does. You don’t have to know what tomorrow holds to believe that He is already there. You simply need to be faithful in the day you’ve been given, knowing that evening will come, morning will follow, and God will still be God when the sun rises again.

At the end of today, pause and name one way God was faithful to you in the last 24 hours. Write it down or say it aloud as a prayer of thanks. Let it remind you that He is present in every day, not just the ones that feel significant.
