John 1:4

Verse of the Day

John 1:4

In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.

Before the manger, before the miracles, before the cross, there was Christ. The Word made flesh. The eternal God who stepped into time, carrying within Himself what humanity had been searching for since Eden: life and light.

This is the heart of incarnation devotion. Not just that God visited, but that He brought everything we lacked. In Him was life. Not mere existence, but true, abundant, eternal life. And that life became the light that exposes our darkness and shows us the way home.

Quiet Prayer

Father, thank You for sending Your Son, the Word made flesh, into our broken world. Thank You that in Christ is life, real and full, and that His light reaches into every corner of my story. Help me receive Him today, not as distant theology, but as the living presence who walks with me. Open my heart to see His nearness and to trust His light, even in places I have kept hidden. Let me live today knowing You are with us. Amen.

Devotional Reflection

The gospel of John opens not with a birth announcement, but with a cosmic truth: the One who created all things became one of us. In Him was life. Not borrowed life. Not temporary life. The very source of all living, breathing existence was contained in the person of Jesus Christ.

And that life was the light of all mankind.

This is not poetry for poetry’s sake. This is the anchor of the Christian faith. Christ did not come to give us a system or a set of instructions. He came to give us Himself. His life became our light. His presence became our hope. His nearness became the answer to every longing we carry.

When you feel like you are stumbling through a dark season, uncertain of what comes next, Christ’s light is not far away. It is already present. The incarnation devotion we celebrate is not about remembering something that happened once, long ago. It is about receiving Someone who is alive and near, today.

Picture walking through a dense forest at night. You have no map, no clear path, and every step feels uncertain. Then someone appears beside you, holding a lantern. They do not just hand you the light and walk away. They stay. They walk with you. Their presence changes everything, not because the forest disappears, but because you are no longer alone in it.

That is what Christ offers. In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. He does not illuminate your entire future from a distance. He walks with you, step by step, offering enough light for the next right thing. His presence is the gift. His nearness is the miracle.

This is especially true in a new chapter. Transition seasons can feel disorienting. The old is gone, but the new has not yet taken clear shape. You may feel stuck between what was and what will be, unsure of how to move forward. In those moments, the temptation is to demand clarity before you take a step. But Christ offers something better than a blueprint. He offers His presence.

The life that was in Him is still in Him. The light that guided fishermen, tax collectors, and broken women still shines. And it shines for you.

You do not have to figure everything out before you trust Him. You do not have to clean yourself up before you come close. The incarnation means God stepped into mess and darkness and humanity, and He did not flinch. He came to be with us. Emmanuel. God with us. Not God observing from heaven. Not God waiting until we get it right. God here, now, in the middle of it.

Grace meets us in that truth. You are not required to carry the weight of your own transformation. You are invited to receive the One who is already transforming you by His presence. His light does not condemn. It reveals, yes, but it also heals. It does not expose you to shame you. It exposes you to free you.

This is incarnation devotion lived out. Recognizing that the Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us so that we could know Him, walk with Him, and be changed by Him. Not from a distance. Not someday. Now.

Today’s Practice

Spend a few quiet minutes today acknowledging Christ’s nearness. You might light a candle as a physical reminder that His light is present with you. As you sit in the stillness, speak this simple truth aloud: In Him is life, and His life is my light. Let that truth settle over your day, especially in moments when you feel uncertain or alone.
