John 1:9

Verse of the Day

John 1:9

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.

This verse sits at the heart of the incarnation devotion we return to each Advent and carry with us into new chapters of faith. Before Jesus arrived as a baby in Bethlehem, the world had prophets, priests, and shadows of what was coming. But here, John tells us something remarkable. The true light was not a teaching, a philosophy, or a distant hope. It was a person, and He was coming into the world.

The light gives light to everyone. Not just the devout. Not just the prepared. Everyone. That includes you, right where you are today.

Quiet Prayer

Lord, thank You for coming into the world as the true light. Thank You that You did not stay distant or wait for me to become worthy. You came near. You stepped into my darkness, and You continue to shine. Help me recognize Your presence today, not just as a memory of Christmas past, but as the living reality of God with us now. Amen.

Devotional Reflection

When we talk about the incarnation, we are talking about God choosing proximity. He did not send instructions from a distance. He did not delegate the work of redemption. He came Himself, in flesh, as the true light entering a world that had grown accustomed to shadows.

John uses the word “true” deliberately. There were other lights. There were religious systems, moral teachers, and cultural wisdom. But none of them could do what Jesus did. None of them could give light to everyone. None of them were the source. They were reflections at best. Jesus was the reality they pointed toward.

This matters deeply when you find yourself in a season of transition or standing at the edge of something new. It is easy to look for light in the wrong places. We search for clarity in our own understanding. We wait for circumstances to align. We hope that if we just try harder or think more clearly, the fog will lift. But John reminds us that the light does not come from within us or around us. It comes to us.

The light was coming into the world. It is still coming. Jesus did not arrive once in history and then retreat. The incarnation devotion we practice is not nostalgia. It is the ongoing recognition that God continues to meet us in our actual lives, in our real struggles, in our present moment.

Think of it this way. When you walk into a dark room and flip the switch, you do not generate the light. You simply receive it. The power is already there. The light is already available. You are not responsible for creating what you need. You are only asked to turn toward it.

That is what this verse invites you to do today. Turn toward the light. Not because you have earned it or because you fully understand it, but because it is already coming. The grace of the incarnation is that God does not wait for you to be ready. He comes anyway.

If you are stepping into a new chapter, unsure of what lies ahead, this is your anchor. The true light that gives light to everyone includes the path you are on. It includes the questions you are carrying. It includes the fears you have not yet voiced. Jesus did not come only for the clear moments. He came for all of it.

Grace meets you here. Not because you have mapped out the next step, but because the Light Himself is present. God with us is not a seasonal sentiment. It is the steady truth that shapes how we move forward. When you do not know what to do, you can still know who is with you. When the road ahead feels uncertain, you can still trust the One who lights it.

This is the gift of the incarnation. God did not stay far off. He entered in. He still does. And His light is not reserved for the spiritually advanced or the emotionally stable. It gives light to everyone, including you, today.

Today’s Practice

Sit quietly for a few moments and say aloud or in your heart, “The true light is here with me now.” Let that truth settle. You do not need to generate hope or manufacture peace. Simply receive the grace of God’s nearness, and let that be enough for this moment.
