John 15:2
He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.
God’s pruning feels uncomfortable because it is. When He begins removing what once felt essential, when He strips away what seemed secure, it can feel like loss rather than preparation. Yet this verse reveals something profound about how God works in those who remain connected to Him. The pruning is not punishment. It is purposeful care from a Father who sees what you are becoming.

Father, help me trust You when I cannot understand what You are removing. Give me eyes to see Your pruning as love, not loss. Teach me to remain in You even when the cutting feels sharp. I do not always know what needs to go, but You do. I surrender to Your wise and careful hands. Amen.
Devotional Reflection
Jesus speaks this verse in the middle of teaching about abiding. He is explaining what it looks like to stay connected to Him, and He does not describe a life free from difficulty. Instead, He describes a life marked by intentional, loving pruning. The gardener does not prune dead branches. He prunes living ones. He cuts back what is alive so that it can grow stronger, healthier, and more fruitful than before.
This is not about behavior management or spiritual performance. This is about relationship. You are not being shaped by distant correction. You are being tended by a God who knows exactly what you need in order to grow. He sees the places where your energy is scattered, where good things have become distractions, where even fruitful efforts have begun to crowd out deeper intimacy with Him.
Pruning often begins with something you did not expect to lose. It might be a relationship that once felt life giving but has become draining. It might be a role that brought affirmation but no longer aligns with where God is leading. It might be a habit, a comfort, or a plan you assumed would remain. The removal can feel abrupt, even painful. You may question whether God sees what He is taking. But He does. And He is not careless.
The verse makes an important distinction. God removes branches that bear no fruit. But He prunes branches that do. If you are experiencing His pruning, it means you are bearing fruit. It means He sees life in you and wants to cultivate even more. The cutting is not a sign of failure. It is a sign that He is invested in your growth and that He knows you are capable of more than you currently see.
Consider a gardener tending a grapevine. If he allows every shoot to grow unchecked, the plant will expend energy in too many directions. The fruit will be small, weak, and scattered. But when he carefully removes excess growth, the plant can focus its strength. The remaining branches receive more nutrients, more sunlight, more of what they need to produce abundant, healthy fruit. The vine does not lose its purpose when it is pruned. It gains clarity.
God’s pruning works the same way in your life. He is not trying to diminish you. He is redirecting your energy toward what matters most. He is clearing away what competes for the nourishment that should flow into the branches He is calling you to bear. You may feel the loss, but you are not being emptied. You are being focused.
This process requires trust. You cannot always see what God sees. You do not know which branches need to go or why the timing feels so sudden. But you can trust the character of the gardener. He does not prune out of anger or impatience. He prunes because He loves you enough to prepare you for greater fruitfulness. He knows that what He is removing would eventually weigh you down, drain your strength, or keep you from the fullness He has planned.
If you are in a season where God seems to be cutting things away, do not assume you have done something wrong. Ask Him to help you see this season for what it is. Ask Him to show you what He is making room for. Ask Him to steady your heart so that you can remain in Him even when the pruning feels sharp. You do not have to understand every detail. You simply need to stay connected to the vine.
Fruitfulness is not about doing more. It is about abiding deeply and allowing God to shape the branches He has given you. The pruning may be painful, but it is not permanent. What He is cutting away now is making space for something better. Trust Him. He knows what He is doing. And He is not finished with you yet.
Today’s Practice
Ask God to show you one area where He may be pruning right now. Instead of resisting or rushing to replace what He is removing, spend a few quiet minutes surrendering that area to Him. Thank Him for caring enough to prepare you for deeper fruitfulness, even when the process is uncomfortable.
