Verse of the Day
Ephesians 4:24
And to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
The beginning of a new year often stirs something in us. We want to start fresh, to be different, to become more of who we hope to be. But real transformation is not a surface change. It is not built on self-improvement strategies or willpower alone. Paul reminds us that becoming new means putting on something God has already created for us.
This new self is not something we manufacture. It is something we receive. It is created by God, fashioned in righteousness and holiness, and offered to us through Christ. The work of becoming new begins not with our effort, but with our obedience to step into what God has already prepared.
Quiet Prayer
Father, I come to You with a heart that longs to be renewed. Help me to put on the new self You have created for me. Teach me to trust that real change comes not from striving, but from surrendering to Your work in me. Give me the courage to let go of what no longer serves Your purpose and to walk in the righteousness and holiness You have made possible through Christ. Amen.
Devotional Reflection
There is something deeply hopeful about a new beginning. Whether it is a new year, a new chapter, or simply a moment when you realize you cannot keep living the same way, the desire to start fresh is a gift from God. It is His way of reminding you that you are not stuck.
But the kind of newness Paul describes in Ephesians is not cosmetic. It is not about trying harder to be good or setting resolutions you hope to keep. It is about putting on a new self, one that has been created by God Himself. This new self is not an improved version of who you were. It is a completely new identity rooted in Christ.
To put on the new self means to live from a different place. It means recognizing that God has done something in you that you could not do for yourself. Through Christ, you have been given a nature marked by true righteousness and holiness. Not righteousness that you earn, but righteousness that reflects the character of God. Not holiness that you achieve through discipline alone, but holiness that comes from being made new in Him.
This is where a new beginning devotional becomes deeply personal. You do not need to wait until you feel ready or worthy. You do not need to clean yourself up first. God invites you to step into the new self He has already prepared. The question is not whether you are capable of change. The question is whether you are willing to trust Him with it.
Think of it this way. When you put on a coat, you do not create the coat. You simply wear what has been made for you. In the same way, putting on the new self is an act of receiving, not achieving. It is choosing to live in alignment with who God says you are, rather than who you have been.
This does not mean growth happens without effort. Obedience is required. You will need to make real choices that reflect your new identity. You will need to lay down old patterns, old thoughts, and old ways of relating to yourself and others. But the foundation of that obedience is not your strength. It is God’s faithfulness to complete the work He has begun in you.
A new beginning in Christ is not about turning over a new leaf. It is about being given a new life. And that life is marked not by perfection, but by the ongoing work of becoming who you were created to be. It is a life where righteousness and holiness are not burdens, but the natural outflow of being united with Christ.
This season of growth you are in is not random. God is calling you forward. He is inviting you to step into the new self He has fashioned for you, to trust that He knows what you need to become, and to walk in obedience even when it feels unfamiliar. The newness He offers is real. It is lasting. And it begins the moment you choose to believe it.
Today’s Practice
Take a few moments today to ask God what He is inviting you to put off and what He is calling you to put on. Write down one old pattern or mindset you are ready to release, and one truth about your new self in Christ that you will choose to believe today. Then quietly ask Him for the grace to walk in that truth, one step at a time.
