Genesis 10:24
Arpachshad was the father of Shelah, and Shelah the father of Eber.
This verse sits in the middle of a genealogy. It names men whose stories we don’t know. We have no record of their conversations with God, their struggles, or their victories. We only know they were part of the line that led to Abraham, and eventually to Christ.
In the middle of waiting, when nothing seems to be happening, God is still working. Even when your story feels like a quiet mention in someone else’s chapter, you are held in the unfolding of His purposes.
Quiet Prayer
Father, help me trust You in the quiet seasons. When I feel forgotten or ordinary, remind me that You see every generation, every name, every step of faithfulness. Teach me to live well in the waiting, knowing that Your timing is wiser than mine. Let me rest in the assurance that You are always at work, even when I cannot see it. Amen.
Devotional Reflection
Genesis 10 is a genealogy. It lists names, descendants, and regions. Most of us skim past these chapters. They feel disconnected from the drama of the flood or the calling of Abraham. But tucked into this list is Genesis 10:24, a verse that names two men, Shelah and Eber, who were faithful in their generation and part of the line that would carry the promise forward.
We don’t know what Shelah believed or how Eber prayed. We don’t have stories of their courage or their failures. What we do have is the record that they were there. They lived. They mattered. And through them, God’s plan continued.
Waiting seasons often feel like this. You are faithful. You show up. You trust God with what you cannot control. But nothing dramatic is happening. You are not the one crossing the Red Sea or standing before Goliath. You are simply living your life, doing what God has placed in front of you, wondering if any of it matters.
It does.
God’s work in the world often happens through people whose names we will never know. The faithful grandmother who prayed. The teacher who stayed consistent. The friend who showed up quietly, year after year. These are not the stories that make headlines, but they are the stories that shape generations.
In a waiting season, it is easy to believe that if nothing visible is changing, nothing is happening. But God does not measure significance the way we do. He does not need your life to be dramatic for it to be purposeful. He is writing a story that spans generations, and your faithfulness today is part of that work.
Shelah and Eber did not know they were in the genealogy of Jesus. They simply lived their lives in obedience to what God had given them. That is what we are called to do as well. We are called to trust that God’s timing is unfolding, even when we cannot see the full picture.
Waiting does not mean you are stuck. It means you are being held. It means God is preparing something you cannot yet see. It means that what feels ordinary to you may be sacred in the economy of heaven.
There are seasons when God calls you to rest in the fact that He is working, even when you are not striving. He is moving, even when you are still. He is writing your story into His greater plan, even when you feel like a name in the middle of a list.
You may not know the outcome yet. You may not see the breakthrough. But that does not mean God has forgotten you. It means He is faithful in the waiting, just as He was faithful to every generation that came before you.
Genesis 10:24 reminds us that God sees every life. He remembers every name. And He is always working, even in the generations that feel invisible.
Today’s Practice
Write down one area of your life where you are waiting for God to move. Ask Him to help you trust that He is working, even when you cannot see it. Then choose one small act of faithfulness you can do today in that area, not to force an outcome, but to honor Him in the waiting.
