Genesis 6:14
Make yourself an ark of gopher wood. Make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch.
God gave Noah a command that must have seemed nearly impossible to understand. Build an ark. Gather materials. Prepare for something you’ve never seen. Do it while the world around you continues as it always has, with no sign of the flood to come.
This verse doesn’t record Noah’s questions or hesitations. It simply records what God said: build, prepare, cover. The instruction was detailed and practical, but the timing remained hidden. Noah had no date. No countdown. Just the command to begin and the trust required to keep going.
When God asks you to prepare for something you can’t yet see, you’re standing where Noah stood. You’re being asked to trust not just the promise, but the process. You’re being asked to build while you wait.

Lord, I don’t always understand Your timing. You’ve asked me to prepare, to take steps, to keep building even when I can’t see what’s coming. Help me trust You in the doing, not just in the dreaming. Teach me to be faithful in the work You’ve given me today, even when the promise still feels distant. I surrender my need to control the timeline, and I choose to obey one step at a time.
Devotional Reflection
Noah’s story begins with an instruction, not an explanation. God didn’t tell him when the flood would come. He didn’t justify the timeline or explain why the preparation had to happen now. He simply told Noah what to do, and Noah had to begin without knowing how long it would take or what people would say while he worked.
There’s something deeply uncomfortable about this kind of obedience. It’s one thing to trust God for a promise. It’s another to trust Him while you’re still preparing for it, with no evidence that it’s close and no guarantee of when it will arrive.
Maybe you’ve felt this. God has spoken something over your life. A calling. A direction. A quiet conviction that He’s preparing you for something specific. You’ve started. You’ve taken steps. You’ve been obedient in the small things. But time keeps passing, and nothing has shifted yet. You’re still building. Still preparing. Still waiting for the moment when it all makes sense.
Genesis 6:14 reminds us that obedience often begins long before breakthrough does. Noah didn’t build the ark the week before the flood. He built it during years of normalcy, when everything around him stayed exactly the same. His faith wasn’t proven in a single moment of crisis. It was proven in the daily choice to keep working on something no one else could see.
That’s the nature of a waiting season. It’s not passive. It’s not sitting still while God works somewhere else. It’s active trust. It’s doing what He’s asked you to do today, even when today looks a lot like yesterday. It’s preparing your heart, your hands, and your life for what He’s promised, even if the fulfillment is still out of sight.
The ark wasn’t built in secret or in isolation. Noah’s obedience was visible. It was public. It required resources, time, and effort. It must have required him to answer questions, to face doubt, and to keep going when others dismissed what he was doing. But he didn’t build based on what others understood. He built based on what God had said.
You may be in a season where your obedience doesn’t make sense to anyone else. Where the work you’re doing feels invisible or premature. Where people don’t understand why you’re preparing for something that hasn’t happened yet. But faithfulness in the waiting isn’t about convincing others. It’s about continuing to trust the One who gave you the instruction in the first place.
God didn’t ask Noah to build the ark after the rain started. He asked him to build it while the sky was still clear. And that’s often how He works. He asks you to prepare before the promise arrives. To take steps before you see the outcome. To trust Him not just for the destination, but for every season in between.
The waiting isn’t wasted. The preparation isn’t pointless. Every act of obedience during this season is building something. You may not see it yet, but God does. And when His timing unfolds, you’ll be ready not because you rushed it, but because you trusted Him enough to build while you waited.
Today’s Practice
Ask God to show you one small act of obedience He’s asking of you today. It may not feel urgent or significant, but do it anyway. Trust that your faithfulness in the present is preparing you for what He’s already planned ahead.
