Genesis 6:17
I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish.
This is one of Scripture’s most sobering announcements. God speaks plainly about judgment, about ending, about the flood that will reshape everything. But these words weren’t spoken into a vacuum. They were spoken to Noah, a man already building an ark, already listening, already trusting that God’s word was true even when the skies were still clear.
When you’re in a waiting season, God’s timing can feel heavy. You know something is coming. You sense the shift. But you’re still here, in the ordinary stretch of days, and the promise hasn’t arrived yet. Genesis 6:17 reminds us that God speaks about what is coming before it comes. He prepares His people. Noah received one of the hardest assignments in all of Scripture. He was told to build a massive ark for a flood no one had ever seen. The skies were clear. Life went on as usual. And yet God had already declared what was coming. Genesis 6:17 wasn’t a warning given the day before the rain. It was spoken years in advance, during the long, quiet season of preparation.
This is where trust becomes tangible. Noah had to keep building when there was no rain. He had to keep listening when others weren’t. He had to believe God’s word was enough, even when his circumstances hadn’t changed yet. The waiting wasn’t wasted. It was the season where obedience took shape, where faith became something you could see with your hands.
You may be in a similar place right now. God has spoken something over your life. You’ve heard His voice. You know there’s a promise, a calling, a shift ahead. But you’re still in the building phase. You’re still showing up in the ordinary rhythms, trusting that what God said is true even though the evidence isn’t here yet. The skies are still clear. The circumstances haven’t shifted. And the waiting feels long.
Genesis 6:17 reminds you that God’s declaration comes before His deliverance. He doesn’t wait until the last second to prepare you. He gives you time to trust Him, to respond in obedience, to build your life around His word even when no one else sees what you see. This isn’t cruelty. It’s care. God is forming something in you during the wait that wouldn’t exist without it.
Think of a gardener who plants seeds in dry soil and then waits for the rain. The rain will come. The gardener believes that. But in the meantime, there’s preparation. The soil is turned. The rows are laid. The seeds are placed with intention. The waiting isn’t empty. It’s full of quiet, faithful work that positions everything for the moment the rain finally falls.
That’s where you are. You’re not just marking time. You’re being prepared. You’re learning to trust God’s word over your sight. You’re choosing obedience when it would be easier to wait for proof. You’re building an ark in a world that doesn’t see the flood coming. And one day, when God’s timing unfolds exactly as He said it would, you’ll be ready. Not because you were clever, but because you trusted Him during the long stretch of waiting.
There’s something else here, too. Genesis 6:17 is a hard verse. It speaks of judgment and loss. It’s not comforting in the way we often want Scripture to be. But it’s honest. It reminds us that God is sovereign, that He sees all things, and that His plans will not be stopped by human resistance or delay. When God says something will happen, it will happen. His word doesn’t fail.
That truth can anchor you when the waiting feels uncertain. You don’t have to guess whether God will follow through. You don’t have to wonder if His promises are conditional or flexible. What He has spoken, He will do. Your job isn’t to make it happen. Your job is to trust Him while His timing is still unfolding.
Noah didn’t control the rain. He didn’t set the schedule. He simply obeyed, day after day, in a season that must have felt endlessly long. And when the floodwaters finally came, everything God had said proved true. The ark that seemed unnecessary became the only safe place. The obedience that felt costly became the path to preservation. The waiting that felt dry became the soil where trust took root.
You can trust God today, even if nothing has shifted yet. Even if your soul feels dry. Even if the promise still seems distant. He is faithful. He is working. And He will do exactly what He has said.
Today’s Practice
Write down one thing God has spoken over your life that hasn’t come to pass yet. Pray over it today, thanking Him that His word is true even when the evidence isn’t visible. Ask Him to help you build in obedience during this season of waiting.
