Genesis 6:21
You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them.
Noah had already received the impossible command to build an ark. He’d already faced the questions, the doubt, the sheer weight of what God was asking. And now, in Genesis 6:21, God adds another instruction: gather the food. Not just enough for a few days. Enough to sustain every living creature through a flood that hadn’t yet come.
This verse isn’t about the dramatic moment. It’s about the steady obedience required while you wait for God’s promise to unfold. It’s about trusting Him enough to prepare for what you cannot yet see.

Lord, I confess that waiting is hard. I want to see the outcome now, to know that my obedience matters, to feel the relief of completion. But You are asking me to trust You in the preparation, in the gathering, in the small faithful steps that no one else may notice. Teach me to obey even when the promise feels distant. When we read the story of Noah, we often focus on the flood itself. The rain, the ark rising, the dove returning with an olive branch. We imagine the relief Noah must have felt when dry land finally appeared. But Genesis 6:21 pulls us into a quieter, less celebrated moment: the preparation.
God told Noah to gather food. Not after the rain started. Not when the floodwaters were rising. Before any of it. Before there was any visible proof that the flood was coming at all.
This is where faith gets tested. Not in the dramatic rescue, but in the dailiness of trusting God while His timing is still unfolding. Noah had to gather grain, sort provisions, organize storage, and ensure there was enough for every creature God would send. He had to do the work of obedience without knowing exactly when it would matter.
You may feel like you’re in a similar season right now. God has spoken. He’s given you a calling, a direction, a promise. But the fulfillment hasn’t come yet. And in the meantime, He’s asking you to prepare. To stay faithful. To do the small, steady things that don’t feel significant in the moment.
Maybe it’s pursuing education for a calling you haven’t stepped into yet. Maybe it’s building character in a season where no one is watching. Maybe it’s continuing to serve, to pray, to show up faithfully even when the breakthrough feels far away.
It’s tempting to interpret waiting as inactivity. To think that if God really had a plan, you’d already be living in it. But Genesis 6:21 teaches us something different. Waiting isn’t passive. Obedience doesn’t pause until the promise arrives. God often calls us to prepare in the waiting, to trust Him enough to act on what He’s said even before we see the outcome.
Think about what Noah’s obedience required. It wasn’t just belief. It was action rooted in belief. He had to spend time, energy, and resources preparing for something that made no logical sense to anyone around him. He had to trust that God’s word was enough, even when the evidence wasn’t there yet.
This is the kind of faith God honors. Not the faith that waits for proof before it moves, but the faith that obeys because God has spoken. Not the faith that demands clarity before it steps forward, but the faith that gathers the food because God said to gather it.
You don’t have to see the whole plan. You don’t have to understand the timing. You don’t have to know how it will all come together. You just have to trust that God is faithful, that His word is true, and that your obedience matters even when it feels small.
Noah didn’t know how long he’d be on the ark. He didn’t know exactly when the rain would start or when it would stop. But he knew God had told him to prepare, and so he did. He trusted God’s word over his own understanding. He chose faithfulness over certainty.
That’s the invitation for you today. To trust God in the preparation. To believe that He is working even when the fulfillment hasn’t arrived yet. To keep gathering the food, building the obedience, doing the steady work of faith while His timing is still unfolding.
The promise is coming. The rain will fall. The ark will rise. But right now, God is asking you to prepare. And in that preparation, you are learning to trust Him not just for the outcome, but through the process.

It might be setting aside time to study, reaching out to someone who can mentor you, or simply writing down what God has called you to and praying over it. Trust that your obedience matters, even before you see the results.
