Genesis 7:21
Every living thing that moved on land perished—birds, livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind.
This verse arrives in the middle of the flood account. The rain has been falling. The ark is sealed. Noah and his family are inside, surrounded by water that continues to rise.
Here, in Genesis 7:21, we see the finality of judgment alongside the faithfulness of God’s preservation. Every living thing perished, but not Noah. Not his family. Not those God had set apart.
This is what trusting God looks like while His timing is still unfolding. You are waiting inside the ark. The storm is real. The loss around you is real. But God’s promise holds, even when the water is still rising.

Lord, I am waiting, and the storm feels long. I see the devastation around me, and I wonder when the rain will stop. Teach me to trust You not just in the outcome, but in the middle, when I am still inside the ark and cannot yet see land. Anchor my heart in Your faithfulness. Help me believe that Your timing is not cruel, but purposeful. Amen.
Devotional Reflection
We often talk about trusting God’s timing as if it is something we do once and move on. But Genesis 7:21 shows us a different picture. This verse does not describe the end of the flood. It describes the middle.
Noah had already obeyed. He had built the ark. He had gathered his family and the animals. He had trusted God enough to step inside. Then the door closed. The rain fell. The flood came.
By the time we reach Genesis 7:21, Noah and his family have been in the ark for weeks. The water is still rising. The devastation is complete. And they are still waiting.
This is the part of the story we do not romanticize. We talk about Noah’s obedience. We celebrate the rainbow at the end. But we rarely sit with the waiting, the uncertainty, the long stretch of time when Noah could not see land, could not leave the ark, and could not do anything but trust that God had not forgotten him.
You may be in that place right now. You have obeyed. You have stepped into what God called you to do. You have made the hard choice, said the hard yes, trusted Him with something that cost you. And now you are waiting. The storm is still raging. The floodwaters are still rising. And you wonder if God’s timing will ever arrive.
Genesis 7:21 does not give you an answer about when. It does not tell you how much longer. But it does remind you that God’s timing does not mean God’s absence. Noah was sealed inside the ark by God Himself. That was not abandonment. That was protection.
When you are waiting, it can feel like nothing is happening. You cannot see progress. You cannot measure movement. You are inside the ark, and the view is limited. But God is still faithful. The ark is still floating. The promise is still intact.
Trusting God while His timing is still unfolding means accepting that you do not control the pace. You do not get to decide when the rain stops. You do not get to rush the waiting season. But you do get to choose whether you will stay anchored in faith or drift into fear.
Noah’s obedience did not end when he entered the ark. It continued every single day he stayed inside. Every morning he woke up to the same walls, the same storm, the same uncertainty. And every morning, he trusted that God had not forgotten His promise.
That is what trusting God’s timing looks like. It is not passive. It is not resignation. It is active, daily, stubborn belief that God is still working even when you cannot see it yet.
You may feel like everyone else is moving forward while you are stuck in place. You may feel like your obedience should have produced results by now. You may feel like the waiting is punishment instead of protection. But Genesis 7:21 reminds you that God’s timing includes the middle, not just the end.
The flood was not evidence that God had abandoned Noah. It was evidence that God was doing exactly what He said He would do. Noah’s job was not to control the outcome. It was to stay faithful while God’s plan unfolded.
That is your job too. Stay faithful. Stay in the ark. Trust that the God who called you into this season has not left you alone in it. His timing is still unfolding, and you are still held.
Today’s Practice
Today, speak one truth out loud about God’s faithfulness in your current waiting season. It might be as simple as, “God has not forgotten me,” or “God’s timing is not cruelty.” Say it once in the morning and once before you sleep. Let that truth anchor you while His plan continues to unfold.
