“Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.”
Devotional Reflection
There is a quiet ache in this verse. It speaks of people who are not fully at home in this world, whose hearts are pointed somewhere beyond what they can see.
They “were longing for a better country.” Before we explain it, just let those words rest over your own life for a moment. A better country. A heavenly one. A place where the deepest longings of your heart are met in the presence of God.
You may not always have language for it, but you know the feeling. It surfaces in the hospital waiting room, or in the loneliness that lingers after a crowded holiday. It appears when the house is finally quiet at night, and you sense that even on the best days, something is still incomplete.
Scripture tells you that this ache is not a failure of faith. It is the fruit of faith. The men and women in Hebrews 11 trusted God so deeply that they began to lean toward another world. They walked through this life as pilgrims, not permanent residents.
Think of living for a season in a small rental home while your true house is being built. You care for the rental. You sweep the floors, you hang a few pictures, you make it warm for those who visit. But you never forget: this is not the final address. Your heart is quietly turned toward what is being prepared for you.
Hebrews 11:16 says that God Himself has prepared “a city” for His people. This is not wishful thinking or spiritual daydreaming. It is the settled promise of a God who does not lie. Heaven is not a vague comfort but a prepared place, crafted by a loving Father for His children.
And there is something else here, something deeply tender: “Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God.” He is not embarrassed by those who long for Him. He is not weary of your tears, your questions, your longing for more than this world can give.
Perhaps you carry regrets or memories that make you feel unworthy to belong to Him. Perhaps you look at your faltering steps of faith and wonder if you disappoint Him. But this verse quietly counters those fears. The God of heaven is not ashamed to be called your God when your heart is turned toward Him, however imperfectly.
He is not ashamed of the woman who returns to Him again and again with the same sorrow.
He is not ashamed of the weary believer who whispers, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.”
He is not ashamed of the saint who still feels strangely out of place in this world, even after many years of walking with Him.
In fact, your homesickness for Him is a sign that His Spirit is at work in you. The desire for “a better country” is not an escape from reality; it is a clear view of reality. This world is real, and it matters deeply, but it is not final. It is not ultimate. It is not home in the fullest sense.
When life feels thin, or unfair, or simply unfinished, you do not have to pretend you are satisfied. You are allowed to say, even with tears, “Lord, my heart is longing for that better country.” And instead of scolding you, He answers with this assurance: “I am not ashamed to be called your God. I have prepared a place for you.”
This does not pull you away from your present responsibilities. Paradoxically, knowing that your true home is with Him frees you to be more faithful where you are. You can love the people in front of you, serve in the ordinary tasks of the day, and endure the sorrows you cannot fix, because you know this is not the whole story.
One day, the city He has prepared will no longer be a distant hope but a present reality. No more fragile bodies, no more unspoken griefs, no more fractured relationships, no more nights that feel too long. Only the steady, shining nearness of God, and the joy of being fully at home.
Until then, you walk as a citizen of that better country, even while your feet stand on this soil. Your heart may ache, but it is an ache that points somewhere true. God sees it. He honors it. And He is not ashamed to be called your God.
Quiet Prayer
Lord, You know the places where my heart feels restless and out of place. Thank You for reminding me that it is not strange to long for a better country with You. Teach me to live faithfully here while my hope is anchored in what You have prepared. Help me believe that You are not ashamed to be called my God, even on the days when I feel weak and unfinished. Let my quiet homesickness draw me closer to Your heart, and let my soul rest in Your promise.
