Jeremiah 1:5
Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.
God’s knowledge of you extends beyond your ability to comprehend it. Before you took your first breath, before you understood language or your own name, He saw you completely. This verse speaks to Jeremiah, but the principle reaches into every believer’s story. God does not wait for you to feel qualified before He calls you. He does not need you to understand your purpose fully before He begins working it into your life.
The weight of this truth can feel disorienting. You may still be searching for clarity about why you are here or what you are meant to do. You may feel unprepared, unfinished, or uncertain. Yet God’s purpose for you was not shaped by your readiness. It was shaped by His intention, formed in you before you had any awareness of it at all.
Quiet Prayer
Lord, I come before You knowing that You formed me with purpose even when I cannot see it clearly. Help me trust that You knew me before I knew myself. Teach me to rest in Your design rather than scrambling for validation or proof. Let me believe that being called by You is more certain than any feeling I wait to experience. Anchor me in the truth that I belong to You, not because I earned it, but because You chose it.
Devotional Reflection
Jeremiah was young when God spoke this word over him. He did not feel like a prophet. He did not have the credentials, the confidence, or the readiness. His response was immediate and honest: he told God he did not know how to speak, that he was only a child. But God did not revise the call. He did not wait for Jeremiah to grow into it on his own. Instead, He reminded Jeremiah that the calling came first, and the preparation would follow.
This is often how God works in your life. He does not ask you to become something before He names you. He names you, then walks with you as you grow into what He has already declared. The confusion you feel about your purpose is not a sign that you missed something. It is part of the process of learning to trust a God who knows you more fully than you know yourself.
You may have spent years trying to discover what you are supposed to do, scanning your gifts and circumstances for clues. You may have compared yourself to others who seem more certain, more equipped, more visibly used by God. But purpose is not something you uncover through performance. It is something God reveals as you walk closely with Him, often in ways that do not match your expectations.
Think of a seed planted in soil. It does not understand what it will become. It cannot see the design embedded in its structure. But the gardener knows. The gardener plants with intention, tends with care, and waits for the right season. You are not responsible for knowing everything about what God is doing in you. You are responsible for staying rooted, for remaining in His presence, and for trusting that He finishes what He starts.
There is deep freedom in this. You do not have to manufacture purpose or force it into being. You do not have to prove you are valuable or convince God you are worth using. He set you apart before you could do anything to earn it. That means your identity and calling are grounded in His character, not your competence.
This also means you can stop waiting to feel ready. Readiness is not the requirement. Willingness is. God does not need you to arrive fully formed. He needs you to stay open, to listen, and to obey when He leads you into something that feels bigger than you can manage alone. That is exactly where His strength becomes most evident.
Jeremiah’s calling did not make his life easier. It made his life purposeful. He faced rejection, isolation, and hardship. But he also experienced the sustaining presence of a God who never left him, who gave him words when he had none, and who used his life in ways that still echo today. The same God who knew Jeremiah before he was born knows you just as fully. He has not forgotten you. He has not overlooked you. He is already at work, shaping you into the person He created you to be.
Today’s Practice
Ask God to show you one area where you have been waiting to feel ready before you move forward. Bring that hesitation to Him in prayer. Ask Him not for certainty, but for trust. Then take one small step of obedience in that direction today, even if you still feel unqualified.
