Luke 1:28

Verse of the Day

Luke 1:28

And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!”

The angel’s words to Mary carry a greeting that changed everything. Not just for her, but for all of us. In the stillness of an ordinary day, heaven broke through with news of extraordinary grace. God was about to do something new, and He chose to begin with a simple declaration: You are favored. The Lord is with you.

This Christmas devotion invites us to sit with that same truth. Before any instruction, before any demand, before Mary even understood what was being asked of her, she received a promise. God’s presence was already with her. His favor had already found her.

Quiet Prayer

Father, thank You for meeting me where I am, just as You met Mary. Help me receive Your presence today, not because I’ve earned it, but because You have chosen to be with me. Quiet my heart to hear the hope You are speaking over my life. Let the light of Christ’s coming settle into the places where I feel uncertain or unprepared. I trust that You are with me, even now.

Devotional Reflection

Mary’s story begins not with her readiness, but with God’s favor. She wasn’t seeking an angelic visitation. She wasn’t campaigning for a divine assignment. She was living her life, and God stepped into it with a word that would redefine her entire future.

The angel’s greeting is stunning in its simplicity. There’s no preamble about Mary’s qualifications. No list of her spiritual accomplishments. Just a declaration of who God says she is and where God already is.

We often approach the Christmas story as if it’s only about what happened back then. But this verse speaks directly into the transitions and new chapters we face today. When life shifts unexpectedly, when God seems to be calling us toward something we don’t fully understand yet, we can anchor ourselves in the same truth Mary received: the Lord is with you.

You may be standing at the edge of something new. A season you didn’t plan for. A calling you’re not sure you’re ready to step into. A chapter that feels both exciting and overwhelming. And in the middle of that uncertainty, God meets you with favor, not because you’ve mastered everything, but because He has chosen to be present with you.

Mary’s response wasn’t immediate confidence. Scripture tells us she was “greatly troubled” by the angel’s words. She questioned how this could be. But she didn’t run from the greeting. She stayed present to it. She let the truth settle before she understood all the details.

This is where many of us get stuck. We want to understand the entire plan before we accept the promise. We want clarity on every step before we believe God is truly with us. But Mary shows us a different way. She received the word first. She let the declaration of God’s favor and presence become the foundation, even while the future remained unclear.

Think of it like standing in a dark room when someone turns on a lamp. You don’t see everything all at once. But the light changes your reality immediately. You know you’re not alone anymore. You know there’s a way forward, even if you can’t yet see every detail of the path.

The hope of Christ’s coming, both then and now, is that God enters our reality with light. He doesn’t wait for us to get everything sorted out. He meets us in the middle of our ordinary days and speaks a word of extraordinary grace. You are favored. I am with you. This changes everything, even before we know what comes next.

As you reflect on this Christmas devotion, let yourself sit with the greeting before the assignment. Let the truth that God is with you become more real than your uncertainty about what He’s asking. Favor isn’t about worthiness. It’s about God’s choice to draw near. And He has drawn near to you.

The Lord is with you. Not because your life is perfectly ordered. Not because you’ve figured out how to navigate this new chapter flawlessly. But because God, in His kindness, has chosen to be present. That presence is the foundation for everything else.

Today’s Practice

Set aside five minutes in a quiet space today. Place your hand over your heart and speak these words aloud slowly: “The Lord is with me. I am favored by God.” Let the truth settle deeper than your questions. Receive the promise before you try to solve anything.
