Quiet Prayer
Lord Jesus, You hold all authority in heaven and on earth. When I feel powerless against circumstances, relationships, or fears that seem overwhelming, help me remember that Your authority stands above them all. I rest in Your sovereignty today. Thank You for being the One who rules over everything I cannot control. Amen.
Devotional Reflection
These are the resurrected words of Jesus. He speaks them on a mountain in Galilee, standing before disciples who had watched Him die and now see Him alive. Before He sends them into the world, He anchors them in one truth: all authority belongs to Him.
Not some authority. Not partial control. All of it. In heaven and on earth. Over death and life. Over sin and grace. Over kingdoms and hearts. Over what you see and what you cannot.
This is not a promise He will give you control. It is the assurance that He already has it.
You live in a world that constantly competes for authority over your heart. Anxiety whispers that it has the final word on your future. Fear insists it controls your safety. Shame claims it defines your worth. Relationships, work pressures, health struggles, financial strain all rise up demanding you bow to their power.
But Matthew 28:18 cuts through every competing voice. Jesus does not share authority. He holds it. Completely.
When you feel trapped in a situation that seems immovable, His authority is greater. When a relationship feels beyond repair, His power to restore surpasses the brokenness. When fear grips you and tells you the worst is certain, His sovereign hand is still at work in ways you cannot yet see.
This verse is not an escape from difficulty. It is an anchor in the middle of it.
Think of a ship in a storm. The waves do not stop because the anchor is thrown. The wind does not calm simply because the ship is tethered. But the anchor holds the vessel steady, keeping it from being swept away. That is what resting in the authority of Jesus does. It does not remove every hardship, but it holds you firm when everything else is trying to pull you under.
You do not have to figure out how Jesus will use His authority in your specific situation. You do not have to map out the resolution or manufacture the peace. You simply have to acknowledge that He holds what you do not. He governs what you cannot. He rules over what feels, in this moment, like it rules over you.
Resting in His authority means you stop trying to be your own savior. You stop exhausting yourself with control you were never meant to carry. You let the One who conquered death and rose in power be the One who handles what overwhelms you today.
This is not passivity. It is trust. It is the active choice to submit the weight of your circumstances to the One whose authority is final and unshakable.
Jesus did not speak these words from a place of theory. He spoke them from the other side of the cross. He knows what it is to face powers that feel absolute. Death, sin, Satan, the full weight of human rebellion. And He defeated them all. His authority was not given because He avoided suffering. It was demonstrated through His victory over it.
So when He says all authority is His, He is not making an empty claim. He is stating the accomplished reality. And He invites you to live from that reality, not in fear of what still feels threatening around you.
You may not feel His authority today. You may only feel the pressure, the uncertainty, the fear. But your feelings do not determine what is true. His word does. And His word is clear. All authority belongs to Him.
Rest there. Let that truth do the steadying work your striving cannot accomplish.

Name one thing that feels like it has authority over you right now. Speak Matthew 28:18 aloud over that situation, and ask Jesus to help you rest in His greater power today.
