Verse of the Day
Proverbs 18:10
The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.
Quiet Prayer
Father, when I am overwhelmed and uncertain, remind me that Your name is my refuge. Teach me to run toward You instead of searching for safety in things that cannot hold me. Let me find rest in who You are, knowing that You are faithful, strong, and near. Thank You for being my shelter when the world feels unstable.
Devotional Reflection
The image is simple but powerful: a fortified tower. In ancient times, these towers were built with thick walls, high enough to see approaching danger, strong enough to withstand attack. They were places people fled to when the enemy came, when the storm rose, when everything around them fell apart.
Scripture tells us that the name of the Lord is just that. A place of safety. Not a religious idea. Not a distant comfort. A real refuge.
But notice the movement. The righteous run to it.
There is urgency here. Not panic, but intentionality. When fear presses in, when confusion rises, when the weight of circumstances becomes too much, the response is clear. You run to God. You do not stand still and hope things improve. You do not look for temporary comfort in things that cannot carry you. You turn toward Him.
Running to God’s name means trusting in who He is. His name represents His character, His faithfulness, His power, His presence. It is not a formula or a method. It is relationship. It is remembering that He is Jehovah Jireh, the God who provides. He is Jehovah Rapha, the God who heals. He is Jehovah Shalom, the God of peace. He is Immanuel, God with us.
When you are anxious, you can run to His steadiness. When you are grieving, you can run to His comfort. When you feel weak, you can run to His strength. The tower does not shift. It does not crumble. It stands.
Sometimes we hesitate to run. We think we need to clean ourselves up first, to have our thoughts in order, to feel spiritually prepared. But that is not what this verse says. It says the righteous run. Not the perfect. Not the ones who have it all together. The righteous are those who trust God, who belong to Him through faith, who know they need Him.
You do not need to wait until you feel strong enough to come to God. You come because you are not strong enough. You run to Him in your weakness, your confusion, your fear. That is exactly when His name becomes most real to you.
Think of a child who falls and scrapes their knee. They do not sit on the ground wondering if they are worthy of comfort. They run to their parent. They know where safety is. They know who will hold them. That instinct, that trust, is what God invites from you.
The world offers many things that look like towers. Success can feel like security until it is taken away. Relationships can feel like refuge until they shift. Control can feel like strength until circumstances prove otherwise. These are not bad things, but they were never meant to be your foundation. They cannot hold the weight of your soul.
Only God can.
When you run to His name, you are not running to an idea. You are running to a Person who knows you, loves you, and will not let you go. You are placing your trust in the One who has proven Himself faithful again and again. In Scripture. In history. In your own life, if you pause long enough to remember.
This does not mean every hard thing disappears the moment you pray. Safety in God is not the absence of difficulty. It is the presence of peace in the middle of it. It is knowing that no matter what you face, you are held. You are seen. You are not alone.
The tower is always open. There is no moment when God turns you away. No circumstance too messy. No fear too small or too large. His name is your refuge, and He invites you to come.
Today’s Practice
When fear or worry rises today, pause and speak God’s name aloud. Remind yourself of one truth about His character, and let that be the place you rest.
