We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death.

If you are in a season of transition, questioning where you stand with God or what has truly changed since you gave your life to Him, this verse offers a clear and reassuring answer. The evidence of eternal life is not perfection. It is love.

Father, thank You that I do not have to wonder where I stand with You. You have shown me that the love I feel for others, even when it is small or imperfect, comes from You. Devotional Reflection
John writes with certainty. He does not say we might know or we hope to know. He says we know. This is one of the most grounding truths in Scripture for anyone navigating a season of change or spiritual newness. You are not left to guess whether you belong to God. You are given a reliable indicator: love.
This is not romantic love or sentimental affection. It is the kind of love that seeks the good of another person even when it costs you something. It is the love that chooses patience when you would rather withdraw. It is the love that forgives when holding a grudge feels easier. It is love that reflects the character of God because it originates in Him.
Before you knew Christ, love like this did not come naturally. You may have cared for people who cared for you, but the kind of love John describes here is different. It reaches toward people you do not naturally prefer. It shows up when you are tired, inconvenienced, or hurt. It does not depend on what someone can give you in return.
This love is grace in action. It is proof that something fundamental has changed in you. You have passed from death to life. That passage is not something you accomplish by effort. It is something God does in you, and love is the evidence that it has happened.
If you are in a new chapter, trying to understand what it means to live as a follower of Jesus, this verse offers both comfort and clarity. You do not need to perform spiritual maturity or prove yourself through religious activity. You simply need to look at how you treat the people around you. Do you love them? Even imperfectly? Even with struggle? That love, however small it feels, is a sign of life.
John also includes a sobering contrast. Anyone who does not love remains in death. This is not a threat. It is a diagnosis. A life without love is a life disconnected from the source of all life. God is love, and to remain cut off from love is to remain cut off from Him.
But if you are reading this and you recognize even a flicker of love in your heart for others, especially for those who are difficult to love, then you can be confident. You have life. You belong to God. You are no longer defined by what you were. You are being made new by His grace.
This does not mean your love will always feel strong or your actions will always reflect it perfectly. There will be days when you fail to love well. There will be moments when selfishness wins. But the presence of love, even when it is weak or inconsistent, points to a deeper reality. The Holy Spirit is at work in you. You have been brought from death into life.
Today’s Practice
Think of one person in your life who is difficult to love. Ask God to help you see them the way He does, and take one small step today to show them kindness, patience, or grace. Let that act be a quiet reminder that God has given you a new heart.
