Genesis 3:8
And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
There is something deeply human about this moment. Adam and Eve hear the sound of God walking through the garden, and their first instinct is to hide. Not because God has changed, but because they have. What was once a relationship marked by openness and peace is now shadowed by shame and fear.
This is the first hiding in Scripture. It sets a pattern we still follow today.

Lord, I confess that I sometimes hide from You. Not because You are distant, but because I feel exposed. Teach me to walk in the light of Your presence rather than retreating into the shadows of my own fear. Help me trust that You are not looking to condemn me, but to restore me. Devotional Reflection
Before this moment in Genesis 3:8, there was no need to hide. God walked in the garden, and Adam and Eve walked with Him. There was nothing between them. No shame. No fear. No distance. Just presence.
But after their disobedience, everything shifted. They became aware of their nakedness in a way that made them uncomfortable. And when they heard the sound of God’s presence, they did what we all do when we feel exposed. They hid.
It is tempting to read this passage and think it is only about sin. And yes, sin is the reason they hid. But the deeper issue is what sin does to our perception of God. It convinces us that God is someone we need to avoid rather than someone we can run to.
This is still true in our walk with Him. Even when we are pursuing obedience, there are moments when we feel the pull to hide. Maybe it is because we stumbled. Maybe it is because we are uncertain. Maybe it is simply because being fully known feels vulnerable.
But obedience is not about perfection. It is about remaining visible. It is about refusing to retreat into the trees when we hear God’s voice. It is about stepping forward in faith, even when we are aware of our weakness.
Think of it this way. A child learning to walk does not hide when they fall. They look up at their parent, reach out their hands, and try again. The relationship is what gives them courage. They trust that the one watching them is not disappointed, but invested in their growth.
God is not walking through the garden to catch you. He is walking through it to be with you. That changes everything.
Visibility matters. It means you bring your questions to God instead of burying them. It means you acknowledge your struggles instead of pretending they do not exist. It means you let your faith become something lived out loud, not something you manage in private.
Steady obedience is not built on the days when everything feels easy. It is built on the days when you are tempted to hide, and you choose to stay present instead. You choose to open your Bible even when you feel spiritually numb. You choose to pray even when the words feel clumsy. You choose to confess even when it feels humbling.
This is what it means to let faith become visible. It is not about performing for others. It is about refusing to perform for God. It is about letting Him see you as you are, trusting that His presence is not a threat, but a refuge.
The sound of God walking in the garden is not the sound of judgment. It is the sound of pursuit. It is the sound of a God who does not wait for us to fix ourselves before He comes looking. He calls out. He seeks. He invites us back into relationship, even when we have pulled away.
Your obedience does not have to be flawless to be faithful. It just has to be honest. It has to be rooted in the belief that God is not looking to exile you from His presence, but to draw you deeper into it.
So when you hear His voice, do not hide. Stand. Speak. Stay.

Choose one area where you have been spiritually hiding, whether it is a struggle you have not brought to God or a step of obedience you have been avoiding. Today, bring it into the light. Pray about it honestly. Write it down. Speak it out loud. Let your faith be visible, even in your weakness.
