Genesis 14:10
Now the Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits, and when the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some of the men fell into them and the rest fled to the hills.
This verse sits in the middle of a battle scene, a moment of chaos and collapse. Abram hasn’t entered the story yet. His nephew Lot has been captured. The kings who ruled the land have fallen into tar pits, their armies scattered. Everything looks like disaster before rescue arrives.
It’s a strange verse to pause on. But sometimes the most spiritually significant moments happen right before God moves. The valley is full of traps. The situation looks hopeless. And God’s plan is already in motion, even though no one can see it yet.
Quiet Prayer
Lord, I am standing in my own valley today, and I cannot see the way forward. Help me trust You when everything around me feels uncertain. Teach me to wait with faith, not fear. Remind me that You are working even when I cannot yet see Your hand. I trust that Your timing is perfect, even when it feels slow.
Devotional Reflection
Genesis 14:10 captures a moment of complete disarray. The Valley of Siddim was a low-lying area near the Dead Sea, riddled with tar pits. During the battle, the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah tried to flee, but some of their men fell into these pits. The rest scattered to the hills. It was total defeat, a moment of vulnerability and chaos.
Then, just a few verses later, Abram enters the scene. He rescues Lot. He defeats the kings. He brings order out of chaos. But in this verse, none of that has happened yet. This is the valley moment. The waiting moment. The moment when everything looks lost.
You may be living in your own version of Genesis 14:10 right now. You’re in a season where the situation looks worse before it gets better. You’re waiting for God to move, but all you can see is the mess. The pits. The scattering. The uncertainty. You know God is faithful, but His timing is still unfolding, and that gap between promise and fulfillment feels heavy.
Waiting seasons are hard because they require you to trust what you cannot yet see. You’re standing in the valley, and rescue hasn’t arrived. The breakthrough hasn’t come. The answer hasn’t been given. And yet, God is already at work. His plan is in motion. His timing is precise. He is never late, even when He doesn’t arrive on your schedule.
The valley is not a place of abandonment. It’s often where God is preparing the next chapter. The chaos you’re standing in is not outside of His control. He sees the pits. He sees the fear. He sees your heart, and He is still sovereign over every detail.
Think of it this way. A photographer waits for the right light before taking the shot. The scene is already there. The subject is ready. But the timing has to be right for the image to be what it’s meant to be. God’s timing works the same way. He’s not stalling. He’s not ignoring you. He’s waiting for the moment when His glory will be most clearly seen and His purpose most fully accomplished.
Abram didn’t know he was about to become a rescuer when this verse was unfolding. Lot didn’t know help was coming. The men in the valley didn’t know the story wasn’t over. But God knew. And He was already moving Abram into position.
When you’re in a waiting season, it’s easy to interpret silence as absence. It’s easy to believe that delay means denial. But God’s silence is not His absence. His delay is not His rejection. He is present in the valley with you, and He is working in ways you cannot yet perceive.
Trusting God while His timing is still unfolding means releasing your need to control the outcome. It means choosing to believe He is good even when the circumstances are hard. It means refusing to let fear write the ending to your story before God has finished writing it Himself.
You don’t have to see the full plan to trust the One who holds it. You don’t have to understand the delay to believe in the deliverance. You simply have to stay steady, stay faithful, and keep your eyes on Him.
The valley is not your destination. It’s the place where your faith is deepened, your dependence is strengthened, and your trust is refined. And when God moves, when His timing finally becomes clear, you’ll look back and see that He was faithful in every moment, even the ones that felt like silence.

Write down one area of your life where you’re waiting for God to move. Pray over it today and ask Him to help you trust His timing, even if nothing changes right away. Then let it rest in His hands.
