Galatians 4:3
So also, when we were underage, we were in slavery under the elemental spiritual forces of the world.
Paul uses the image of childhood slavery to describe what life looked like before Christ. He is not speaking of physical chains, but of the spiritual bondage that comes from trying to earn approval, chasing empty systems, and living under the weight of laws we could never fully keep. This verse names a reality many of us still feel even after coming to faith: the pull back toward old patterns, old burdens, old ways of measuring our worth.
You may no longer be bound by the law, but the mind can still default to earning, striving, and performing. This verse reminds you that before grace, you were held captive. And it invites you to remember that Christ came to free you from that kind of life entirely.
Quiet Prayer
Father, thank You for naming the bondage I used to live under. I confess that I still feel the pull to earn my place, to measure my worth by how much I do or how well I perform. Remind me today that I am no longer a slave to those old systems. Help me rest in the freedom You have already given me through Christ. Teach me to walk as someone who is truly free.
Devotional Reflection
Paul is writing to believers who were being tempted to go back. Not back to old sin necessarily, but back to old systems of religion, rules, and spiritual scorekeeping. They had been set free by the gospel, yet they were being persuaded to return to a life defined by performance and external observance. Paul calls that slavery.
The phrase “elemental spiritual forces” refers to the basic principles that governed life before Christ. These were not just Jewish laws. They were any system, spiritual or cultural, that promised standing with God based on human effort. It could be rule-keeping, ritual observance, moral perfectionism, or even the rhythms of religion that become a substitute for relationship.
What makes this verse so relevant today is how easily we slip back into those patterns without realizing it. You can believe the gospel and still operate from the same emotional framework you had before you knew Christ. You can trust Jesus for salvation and still try to earn your sense of worth every single day.
This happens when you start measuring your spiritual life by productivity. When you feel distant from God because you missed your quiet time. When you believe He is pleased with you only when you are performing well. When your peace depends on how disciplined, consistent, or spiritually impressive you have been that week.
Paul is saying that mindset is slavery. It is the same bondage you were freed from. It does not matter if the rules you are following now are Christian ones. If you are living under them instead of living in Christ, you are not walking in the freedom He died to give you.
The contrast Paul will go on to make in this chapter is between slavery and sonship. Slaves work to stay in the household. Sons belong because of the father’s choice. Slaves earn their keep. Sons receive an inheritance. Slaves are always anxious about their standing. Sons rest in their identity.
You were not saved so you could spend the rest of your life trying to stay saved. You were not adopted so you could prove you deserved it. You were brought into the family of God by grace, and that is where you remain. Not by performance. Not by progress. Not by how well you manage your spiritual life. You remain because of Christ.
If you have been in a season where faith feels heavy, where obedience feels like drudgery, where you are tired of trying to measure up, this verse offers an invitation. Stop living like a slave. You are not under those old systems anymore. You do not have to carry that weight. Christ has already carried it for you.
This does not mean obedience does not matter. It means obedience flows from a different place. It comes from love, not fear. From gratitude, not guilt. From freedom, not from trying to secure a standing you already have.
The spiritual forces that once held you captive no longer define you. You are no longer underage, no longer waiting to inherit what is already yours. You are a child of God, fully known, fully loved, fully free.

Take a few minutes today to write down one area where you have been trying to earn God’s approval or measure your spiritual worth. Confess it honestly, and ask God to help you receive His love as a son or daughter, not as someone still trying to prove they belong.
