Ephesians 2:12
Remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world.
Paul’s words to the Ephesians paint a startling picture of what life looked like before Christ. This is not condemnation. It is remembrance. He is asking them to look back so they can better understand where they stand now.
When you are walking through a season of testing or trial, it can feel isolating. You may wonder if God sees you, if you belong, or if the promises you have heard about still apply to your life. Devotional Reflection
Paul is writing to people who once had no access to God’s promises. They were outsiders. They had no covenant, no citizenship in the family of God, and no foundation for hope. That was their reality before the gospel reached them.
But Paul is not writing this to shame them. He is writing it to strengthen them. He wants them to remember the depth of what changed when Christ entered their lives. The gospel did not just improve their situation. It completely redefined it.
You may be in a season right now where you feel spiritually distant. Maybe prayers feel heavy. Maybe the promises of God seem far away. Maybe the noise of the trial is louder than the voice of peace. In moments like that, it is easy to forget what God has already done.
This verse asks you to pause and remember. Not to dwell in the past, but to recognize the contrast. You were once without hope and without God in the world. That is no longer true. Christ has brought you near. You are no longer separated. You are no longer excluded. You are no longer a stranger to the promises of God.
Think of it like standing in a warm, lit room after spending hours in the cold. The warmth does not erase the memory of being cold, but it does remind you that your circumstances have changed. You are inside now. You belong here.
That is what Paul is doing. He is reminding you where you used to stand so you can recognize where you stand now. You have access. You have hope. You have a God who does not turn you away.
When trials come, they can cloud that truth. They can make you feel like you are back on the outside looking in. But the gospel does not shift with your circumstances. Your position in Christ is not based on how you feel today. It is based on what He has already finished.
You may not feel close to God right now. You may not feel peaceful or secure. But peace is not built on feelings. It is built on what is true. And the truth is this: you are not without God. You are not without hope. You are not excluded from His promises.
This verse invites you to let that truth steady you. To stop striving to earn what has already been given. To rest in the reality that you have been brought near, and nothing in your current trial can undo that.
Today’s Practice
Take a moment to quietly name one area where you feel distant from God right now. Then speak this truth aloud: “I am not without hope. I am not without God. I have been brought near through Christ.” Let that statement settle over the uncertainty you are carrying today.
