Galatians 5:5
For through the Spirit we eagerly await by faith the righteousness for which we hope.
This verse holds tension that feels familiar. You wait eagerly, yet you do it by faith. You hold hope for righteousness, but the fulfillment is not yet here. It is the space between promise and arrival, between believing and seeing.
If you are in a season where God seems to be working behind the scenes rather than in plain view, this verse speaks directly into that reality. It reminds you that waiting does not mean passivity. Devotional Reflection
Paul is writing to believers who were being tempted to rely on their own effort to earn righteousness. They were slipping back into old patterns, trying to secure their standing with God through rules and performance. But Paul reminds them that righteousness is not something they manufacture. It is something they wait for by faith, through the Spirit.
This is not passive waiting. It is the kind of waiting that involves expectation. The word “eagerly” carries weight. It suggests longing, attention, readiness. You are not checked out or distracted. You are spiritually alert, positioned in faith, and trusting that what God has begun, He will complete.
Think of someone waiting for news that will change everything. They are not numb to it. They check their phone. They stay near the door. They remain engaged. That is the posture Paul describes here. You are waiting for God to finish what He started in you, and you are doing it with spiritual attention and confident hope.
The righteousness Paul speaks of is not your own. It is the righteousness that comes through Christ, the kind that cannot be earned or lost based on your performance. And yet, you still eagerly await its full realization. You live between justification and glorification, between being made right with God and being fully transformed into His likeness.
This is where faith and patience meet. You trust that God has already declared you righteous through Christ. And you trust that He is still at work, shaping you, refining you, preparing you for the fullness of what He has promised. Both realities are true at once.
If you are in a breakthrough season, this verse helps you understand that breakthrough does not always look like sudden change. Sometimes it looks like sustained faith. Sometimes the breakthrough is internal before it becomes external. You learn to trust God’s timing. You stop forcing outcomes. You stop measuring progress by what others can see.
The Spirit is central to this kind of waiting. You cannot sustain eager, hopeful faith on your own strength. It requires the Holy Spirit to remind you of truth when circumstances feel discouraging. It requires His presence to keep your heart soft, your hope alive, and your faith steady.
This is not about trying harder. It is about staying connected to the One who is already at work in you. When you feel tired of waiting, the Spirit refreshes your perspective. When doubt creeps in, the Spirit points you back to the promises of God. When impatience rises, the Spirit helps you rest in God’s faithfulness.
Waiting by faith means you are not passive, but you are also not striving. You are engaged, expectant, and trusting. You are not trying to earn what has already been given. You are simply believing that what God has promised, He will bring to pass.
Today’s Practice
Take a moment to name one area where you have been striving instead of waiting by faith. Bring it to God in prayer and ask the Holy Spirit to help you shift from effort to expectation, from control to trust. Let today be marked by eager, peaceful waiting rather than anxious striving.
