Genesis 11:23
And Serug lived after he fathered Nahor 200 years and had other sons and daughters.
This verse sits quietly in the genealogy between the tower of Babel and the call of Abraham. It’s easy to pass over. One generation follows another. Serug lives, fathers a son, continues living. No dramatic miracle. No burning bush. Just years passing, children being raised, life unfolding in what appears to be ordinary time.
But this is not wasted time. These generations are the bridge God is building toward His promise. Serug doesn’t know that his descendant will be Abraham. He doesn’t see the nations that will be blessed through his family line. He simply lives faithfully in the season God has given him.
Sometimes the hardest place to trust God is in the middle of the story, when His timing is still unfolding and you can’t yet see what He’s building.
Quiet Prayer
Lord, I confess that I struggle when life feels ordinary and Your promises feel distant. Help me trust that You are working even when I cannot see the outcome. Teach me to be faithful in this season, knowing that You are building something beyond what I can understand. Give me patience to live well in the waiting, trusting that every day matters in Your story. Amen.
Devotional Reflection
We live in a culture that values the dramatic. We celebrate the breakthrough moments, the sudden answers, the instant transformations. But most of life happens in the spaces between those moments. Most of our days look more like Genesis 11:23 than the parting of the Red Sea.
Serug’s life is recorded in a single verse. We know almost nothing about him except that he lived, he had a son named Nahor, and he continued living for two hundred years after that. There’s no record of a supernatural encounter. No vision. No angel visit. Just the steady passage of years in a family line that would eventually lead to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and ultimately to Jesus.
This is the reality of trusting God while His timing is still unfolding. You don’t always get to see the bigger picture. You don’t always know how your faithfulness connects to His greater plan. You simply live each day, raise your children, do your work, and trust that God is building something you may never fully see on this side of eternity.
Think of planting a tree. The person who plants an oak sapling may never sit in its full shade. They water it, protect it, tend the soil around it. Years pass. The tree grows slowly. Perhaps they see it reach twenty feet before they’re gone. But their descendants will climb its branches and rest under its canopy. The planter trusted the process even though they wouldn’t see the full result.
That’s what Serug did. He lived faithfully in his generation, not knowing that God was using his family line to bring the Messiah into the world. He couldn’t have imagined that his name would appear in Scripture as part of the unbroken chain from Adam to Christ. He simply lived, loved, and passed on whatever faith he had to the next generation.
You may be in a season right now that feels like Genesis 11:23. Nothing dramatic is happening. God’s promises seem far off. You’re doing what you know to do, but you can’t see how it connects to anything significant. The temptation is to believe that this time doesn’t matter, that God isn’t moving, that you’re just marking time until something real begins.
But God wastes nothing. Every ordinary day of faithfulness matters. Every prayer you pray in the waiting builds something. Every act of obedience when no one is watching plants seeds you may never harvest yourself. God is always working, even when His timing unfolds slowly and quietly.
The genealogies in Scripture remind us that God works through generations, not just moments. He’s patient. He’s thorough. He doesn’t rush His purposes to match our timelines. Between the promise and the fulfillment, there are often many ordinary years where faithful people simply live and trust.
Serug had no idea he was part of the most important family line in human history. He didn’t need to know. He just needed to be faithful in his generation. That’s what you’re called to as well. Be faithful where you are. Trust God with what you cannot see. Live well in this season, knowing that He is building something far greater than you can imagine.
Your life is not filler between the important moments. It is part of the story God is writing. The waiting season is not wasted time. It’s the soil where trust deepens and character forms. It’s where you learn that God’s faithfulness doesn’t depend on your ability to see the outcome.

Write down one area where you’re waiting on God right now. Instead of asking Him to speed up, ask Him to help you be faithful today, trusting that He is working even when you cannot see it.
