Genesis 1:2
Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
Before there was order, there was waiting. Before there was light, there was darkness. And in that moment between nothing and everything, the Spirit of God was already there, hovering, present, preparing what would come next.
Genesis 1:2 shows us something we often miss in our hurry for breakthrough. God’s Spirit doesn’t only show up when things are finished. He is present in the formless places, the empty seasons, the dark stretches where we cannot yet see what He is doing.
Quiet Prayer
Father, when my life feels formless and uncertain, help me remember that Your Spirit has always been present in the waiting. Teach me to trust You in the darkness, knowing You are not absent but hovering, preparing, working in ways I cannot yet see. Let my heart rest in Your presence, even when I cannot yet see Your plan. Amen.
Devotional Reflection
We tend to think of God’s activity in terms of results. We want the light, the order, the completed work. But Genesis 1:2 invites us into a different kind of faith, one that acknowledges God’s presence even in the unfinished moments.
The earth was formless. It was empty. Darkness covered everything. These are not the conditions we pray for. These are the conditions we ask God to change. Yet Scripture tells us that even here, in this void, the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
That word, hovering, is tender. It is not distant observation. It is intimate attention. The Spirit was not waiting somewhere else until creation was ready. He was there, moving over the deep, preparing the space where light would break through.
You may be in a season that feels formless. Perhaps the plans you had have dissolved, and you are not sure what shape your life is taking anymore. Or maybe you are in an empty season, where the things you hoped would fill your days have not yet arrived. The darkness may feel heavy, not because God is absent, but because you cannot yet see what He is preparing.
This is where Genesis 1:2 becomes more than history. It becomes hope.
God does not need your season to look complete before He begins His work. He does not wait for clarity to show up before He moves. He is present in the waiting itself, hovering over the parts of your life that still feel uncertain, unformed, or dark.
Think of a potter working with clay. Before the vessel takes shape, the clay is formless. The potter’s hands are already moving, already working, even though the finished piece is not yet visible. The clay does not need to understand the process to trust the potter’s hands.
You are in the hands of a God who does not rush and does not abandon. His Spirit is hovering over your life right now, not because you have figured everything out, but because He is faithful in every stage of the process.
This does not mean the waiting is easy. It does not mean the darkness feels comfortable. But it does mean you are not alone in it. The same Spirit who hovered over the formless deep is with you in your formless season. The same God who spoke light into darkness is fully capable of speaking into yours.
What God is doing in you right now may not be visible yet. But invisible does not mean inactive. Formless does not mean forgotten. The Spirit of God is hovering, and that means something is being prepared.
Your job is not to create the light. Your job is to trust the One who does.
Today’s Practice
Sit quietly for a few minutes and picture the Spirit of God hovering over the unseen places in your life. Name one area that feels formless or dark, and instead of asking God to hurry, simply say, “Your Spirit is here. I trust You in this.”
