Genesis 14:2
These kings went to war against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shiab king of Zeboyim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar).
This verse might seem like just a list of kings preparing for battle. But it sits in the middle of a story where Abram’s nephew, Lot, was about to be caught in the crossfire. Abram didn’t know that yet. He was simply living his life, trusting God’s promises, when suddenly everything around him shifted into conflict.
Sometimes God’s promises unfold in the middle of other people’s wars. In seasons of waiting, life doesn’t pause. Chaos still erupts. People still make choices that affect us. And we’re left wondering if God sees it, if He’s still working, if His timing will come through before everything falls apart.

Father, I don’t always understand the battles happening around me. I see conflict, confusion, and choices I didn’t make affecting my life. Help me trust that You are not absent in the chaos. Teach me to wait with peace, knowing that Your promises are not delayed by what I cannot control. Keep my heart steady while Your timing unfolds.
Devotional Reflection
Genesis 14:2 names five kings who went to war. It reads like background information, but for Abram, this moment would soon become deeply personal. Lot had chosen to live near Sodom. When war broke out, Lot and his family were taken captive. Abram had to step into the mess, trust God’s protection, and act with courage even though none of this was part of his plan.
This is what waiting on God often looks like. You’re holding onto a promise. You’re doing your best to walk faithfully. And then something happens that feels completely unrelated to your story, but suddenly you’re in it. A family crisis. A financial disruption. A relationship that shifts unexpectedly. You didn’t cause it, but now you have to navigate it while still trusting that God’s promises are real.
It can feel disorienting. You thought waiting meant stillness, but instead it looks like responding to things you never saw coming. You thought trusting God meant clarity, but instead it looks like moving forward without knowing how everything will turn out.
Here’s what this verse quietly reveals: God’s timing doesn’t require perfect conditions. Abram’s calling didn’t pause because kings went to war. God’s promise to bless him and make him a blessing didn’t become void because Lot made a poor choice. The chaos around Abram became the very context in which God’s faithfulness would be revealed.
When you’re in a waiting season, you might assume that God will work once things calm down. Once the conflict resolves. Once people stop making decisions that complicate your life. But God often works right in the middle of the mess. He doesn’t wait for ideal circumstances to fulfill His promises. He moves in the midst of what feels chaotic, and He invites you to trust Him there.
Trusting God while His timing unfolds means believing that He sees the whole picture. You see five kings going to war. You see disruption and danger. But God sees the rescue He’s about to bring. He sees the courage He’s about to develop in you. He sees the testimony that will come from this season when you look back and realize He never left you.
You don’t have to have it all figured out. You don’t have to know why certain battles are happening around you or why your waiting season feels so complicated. You just have to keep trusting that God is faithful, that His promises are sure, and that He is working even when you can’t see the outcome yet.
Abram didn’t know when he woke up that day that he’d soon be leading a rescue mission. He didn’t know that God would use him to bring Lot home safely. He didn’t know that this chaotic moment would become another chapter in the story of God’s faithfulness. He just had to trust and move forward when the time came.
That’s what you’re called to do, too. Trust while the timing is still unfolding. Believe that God is present in the middle of what feels uncertain. Walk forward with peace, knowing that the promise He gave you is still true, even if the path looks nothing like you expected.
Today’s Practice
When you feel anxious about circumstances you can’t control today, pause and say aloud: “God is faithful, and His timing is good.” Let that truth settle your heart as you trust Him in the waiting.
