Genesis 15:17
When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces.
God made a covenant with Abraham in the dark. After hours of waiting, after the sun had set and Abraham stood in darkness, God appeared. Not in daylight when Abraham could see clearly, but in the night when he had to trust what he could not fully understand.
This verse captures a sacred moment when God alone moved through the covenant pieces, making an unbreakable promise while Abraham watched. The smoking firepot and blazing torch were signs of God’s presence, His commitment, His faithfulness. But they came only after the waiting. Only after darkness fell.
Quiet Prayer
Father, I confess that waiting in the dark is hard. I want to see the whole picture now, to understand Your timing before I trust it. But You were faithful to Abraham in the darkness, and I believe You are faithful to me. Teach me to recognize Your presence even when I cannot see the full path ahead. Help me trust that You are moving, even when I am simply standing still.
Devotional Reflection
Abraham had been waiting for years. God had promised him descendants as numerous as the stars, but he and Sarah remained childless. In Genesis 15, God reaffirmed the promise and sealed it with a covenant ceremony. Abraham prepared the animals, cut them in pieces, and laid them out as was customary for covenant making. Then he waited.
The sun began to set. Darkness came. And still, Abraham waited.
This is where many of us find ourselves. We have heard God’s promises. We have prepared in obedience. We have done what we know to do. But now we are in the dark, and the fulfillment has not yet come. The waiting stretches longer than we expected, and we wonder if we missed something or if God has forgotten.
But look at what happens in Genesis 15:17. God shows up in the darkness. Not before it. Not to prevent it. But in it. The smoking firepot and blazing torch were visible precisely because it was dark. In daylight, they would not have stood out. In the night, they were unmistakable.
God did not need Abraham to do anything during this part of the covenant. In ancient covenant ceremonies, both parties would typically walk between the pieces, binding themselves to the agreement. But here, only God moved through. Abraham watched. God alone took on the responsibility of keeping the promise. This was not a conditional agreement depending on Abraham’s performance. It was a unilateral covenant, secured by God’s faithfulness alone.
When you are in a waiting season, it can feel like nothing is happening. You do not see progress. You do not feel movement. The darkness makes everything unclear. But God’s timing often includes these in-between moments where He is working in ways you cannot yet see. The delay is not a denial. The darkness is not abandonment.
Think of a seed planted in soil. For days, even weeks, nothing appears above ground. To the observer, it looks like nothing is happening. But beneath the surface, roots are growing, strengthening, preparing to support what will eventually break through into the light. The unseen work is just as important as the visible growth.
Your waiting season may feel like that darkness in Genesis 15:17. You are standing in a place where you cannot see what God is doing, but He has not left you. His presence is with you, moving, working, keeping His promises even when you cannot track the progress. The very fact that you are still standing, still trusting, still believing is evidence that He is sustaining you.
God’s timing is rarely our timing, but His timing is always purposeful. He is not delaying to frustrate you. He is preparing you, shaping circumstances, aligning details you cannot see. And when the moment is right, His faithfulness will be unmistakable. Just as the firepot and torch were undeniable signs of His presence in the darkness, you will see His hand in your life when the time comes.
You do not have to manufacture the breakthrough. You do not have to force the promise into reality. God is the one who moves through the covenant. Your part is to trust Him while you wait, to believe that He is present even in the dark, and to remember that His promises do not depend on your ability to make them happen. They depend on His character, and He is unchanging.
Today’s Practice
Before you go to bed tonight, step outside or sit by a window in the dark. Look for any small source of light, a streetlamp, a candle, the moon. Let it remind you that God’s presence is most visible when everything else fades. Speak one simple prayer: “You are here, even in the waiting.”
