Genesis 2:21
So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh.
Before Eve existed, Adam had to sleep. Before the promise was fulfilled, there had to be stillness. Before God brought forth what Adam needed most, He asked him to rest in a season of not knowing.
This is one of Scripture’s earliest pictures of trust. Adam didn’t know what God was doing. He couldn’t see the work happening. He wasn’t asked to help, to plan, or to prepare. He was asked to surrender to a deep sleep while God moved on his behalf.
Sometimes the hardest part of waiting isn’t the length of time. It’s the quiet. It’s the not knowing. It’s the invitation to trust God while His timing unfolds and you can’t yet see what He’s building.
Quiet Prayer
Lord, I confess that waiting is hard for me. I want to see what You’re doing. I want to understand the timeline. But today, I choose to trust that You are working even when I cannot see it. Teach me to rest in Your faithfulness. Help me believe that Your timing is not a delay, but a gift. I surrender my need to control, and I place my trust in You.
Devotional Reflection
Genesis 2:21 is not just about the creation of Eve. It’s about the way God works in seasons we don’t yet understand. Adam had no idea what was coming. He had no warning, no explanation, no chance to prepare. God simply put him to sleep and began something new.
This is often how God moves in our lives. He begins His work in the waiting. He shapes the answer while we’re still asking the question. He prepares the breakthrough while we’re still learning to trust Him in the stillness.
You may be in a season right now where you feel like nothing is happening. You’ve prayed. You’ve trusted. You’ve surrendered the outcome to God. And yet, the thing you’re waiting for hasn’t arrived. The door hasn’t opened. The answer hasn’t come. It feels like silence.
But Genesis 2:21 reminds us that silence is not the same as absence. God was deeply at work in Adam’s life even while Adam was asleep. In the same way, God is deeply at work in your life even when you cannot feel it, see it, or track it.
Waiting seasons are not wasted seasons. They are formative. They teach us that God’s faithfulness does not depend on our ability to see His hand. They remind us that His goodness is not measured by how quickly He answers, but by how perfectly He provides.
Think of it this way. A surgeon doesn’t wake the patient mid-operation to explain every step. The patient trusts the surgeon’s skill, rests under anesthesia, and wakes to find the work complete. In the same way, God sometimes asks us to rest while He does what only He can do.
This doesn’t mean we become passive. It means we stop striving to control outcomes we were never meant to manage. It means we stop convincing ourselves that our anxiety is the same thing as faithfulness. Trusting God while His timing unfolds requires us to release the need to know every detail and rest in the character of the One who does.
Adam had no idea that God was creating the companion he would spend his life with. He had no idea that the answer to his loneliness was being formed in the very moment he surrendered control. And when he woke, he didn’t find disappointment. He found exactly what God had promised, delivered in a way more beautiful than he could have imagined.
Your waiting will not be wasted. What God is building in this season may be hidden from you now, but it will not stay hidden forever. He is not withholding good from you. He is preparing something that will fit your life in ways you cannot yet comprehend.
So today, if you are in a season of deep sleep, spiritually speaking, trust that God has not forgotten you. He is not distant. He is not silent in the way that matters most. He is working. And when the time is right, you will wake to see what He has faithfully prepared.

Write down one area of your life where you’ve been waiting for God to move. Beneath it, write this simple prayer: “Lord, I trust You are working even when I cannot see it.” Return to this throughout the day whenever doubt or impatience rises.
