Genesis 2:7
Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
Before Adam took his first breath, there was dust. Before purpose unfolded, there was formation. Before life moved, God was already at work.
Genesis 2:7 shows us something we often forget when we’re waiting: God’s timing includes the forming. The shaping. The unseen work that happens before the breath comes.

When you’re in a waiting season, it’s easy to believe that nothing is happening. You look at your circumstances and see dust. You see what hasn’t come together yet. You see the gap between where you are and where you hoped to be. In that gap, doubt whispers that God has delayed too long or forgotten altogether.
But this verse reframes everything. Waiting is not wasted time. It is forming time. It is the season when God shapes you for what He is preparing to breathe life into. You are not stuck. You are being made ready.
Think about a potter working with clay. The clay doesn’t understand the pressure. It doesn’t see the design. It only feels the shaping. But the potter knows exactly what he’s creating. Every turn of the wheel, every press of the hand, every moment of heat is purposeful. The clay is not neglected. It is being perfected.
You are that clay. God is not distant. He is close, hands steady, vision clear. He knows what He is forming in you. He knows what needs to be refined, what needs to be strengthened, what needs to be removed. And He is not in a hurry, because He does not make mistakes.
The breath will come. But the forming must happen first.
This is where trust becomes more than a feeling. It becomes a decision. You choose to believe that God is working even when you cannot see it. You choose to believe that His timing is not a punishment but a kindness. You choose to believe that the dust in your hands today will become something alive tomorrow, not because you forced it, but because God breathed on it.
Waiting seasons test this kind of trust. They ask you to hold on when nothing feels certain. They ask you to stay faithful when progress is invisible. They ask you to believe that God’s silence is not absence, but focus. He is forming you with precision. He is preparing you for the breath that will change everything.
The forming is not separate from God’s love. It is an expression of it. He does not shape you carelessly. He does not rush the process because you feel anxious. He shapes you with the kind of patience that only perfect love can sustain.
You are not forgotten in the dust. You are held in the hands of the One who gives life. When the time is right, when the forming is complete, He will breathe. And everything will shift. Not because you earned it, but because He is faithful.

Write down one area of your life where you are waiting for God to move. Then read Genesis 2:7 aloud and say this simple prayer: “God, I trust that You are forming me. I trust that Your breath will come at the right time.” Carry that trust with you today, even if nothing changes yet.
