“Your eyes are too pure to look on evil; You cannot tolerate wrongdoing. Why then do You tolerate the treacherous? Why are You silent while the wicked swallow up those more righteous than themselves?”
Quiet Prayer
Holy God, Your eyes are pure, and your character is perfect, yet I often struggle with what I see around me. I bring You my confusion, my grief, and my questions. Teach me to trust Your heart when I do not understand Your timing. Settle my soul in the truth that you see, you care, and you will make all things right in your way.
Devotional Reflection
Habakkuk speaks words many of us have felt but hesitated to say. He knows that God is holy and cannot tolerate evil, yet what he sees in the world seems to contradict that truth. The wicked look powerful. The faithful look forgotten. God seems silent.
You may know that tension. You believe God is good, yet you watch injustice on the news, see a loved one treated unfairly, or walk through a season where wrong seems to win. Your heart whispers the same question: “Why are You silent?”
Notice that God does not rebuke Habakkuk for asking. This verse is part of a real conversation between a hurting prophet and a listening God. Honest questions are not the enemy of faith. Silence before God is very different from silence from God.
Think of a weaver working at a loom. From underneath, the threads look tangled and senseless. From above, a pattern is forming. Habakkuk stands under the loom. So often, we do, too. God’s holiness remains unchanged, even when we cannot yet see how He will respond to evil. By bringing his confusion into prayer, Habakkuk is already moving toward the God he does not fully understand.
