Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.

There’s something quietly revolutionary in the phrase “let us press on.” It doesn’t promise instant clarity or immediate intimacy with God. It assumes movement, effort, continuity. The knowledge of God is not a single moment of discovery. It’s a patient, purposeful pursuit that unfolds over the course of a lifetime.
Hosea 6:3 invites us into this kind of steady pursuit. It doesn’t say, “Let us learn everything about God in one sitting.” It says, “Let us acknowledge Him. Let us keep going.” There’s humility in that. And there’s hope, too.
The verse doesn’t leave us straining in the dark. It gives us a promise: God will appear. Not might. Not someday if we’re lucky. He will come. And He will come with the same certainty that the sun rises.
That image carries weight. The sunrise doesn’t depend on how you feel about it. It doesn’t wait for you to deserve it. It simply comes, faithful and sure, because that’s what the sun does. God moves toward us the same way, not because we’ve earned it, but because He is reliable. He is good. He shows up.
The second image deepens the first. God comes like the winter rains and the spring rains that water the earth. In an agricultural society like ancient Israel, rain wasn’t just appreciated. It was essential. Without it, nothing grew. The land dried up. Life became harder. But when the rains came, they brought renewal, softness, fruitfulness.
God’s presence works the same way in our lives. When we press on in knowing Him, when we keep showing up even when our hearts feel dry, He meets us. He refreshes what felt hard. He softens what felt brittle. He brings growth where we thought nothing could take root.
But here’s the tension: rain doesn’t come on our schedule. We don’t control when the clouds gather or when the first drops fall. We can prepare the soil. We can position ourselves. But we can’t make it rain.
The same is true in our relationship with God. We can open our Bibles. We can pray. We can sit quietly and wait. But we can’t manufacture spiritual breakthrough. We can’t force intimacy. What we can do is keep pressing on. Keep acknowledging Him. Keep showing up with open hands and patient hearts.
This is where many of us get discouraged. We want the knowledge of God to feel immediate and complete. We want certainty, clarity, a sense of arrival. But spiritual growth is more like farming than flipping a switch. You plant. You water. You wait. And in time, something begins to grow.
The beauty of Hosea 6:3 is that it holds both sides together. Yes, we press on. Yes, we pursue. But no, we’re not doing this alone. God is not distant or indifferent. He is already moving toward us. He will appear. He will come.
That means our pursuit of God is not a desperate scramble to get His attention. It’s a response to the One who is already pursuing us. We acknowledge Him because He has already acknowledged us. We seek Him because He has already made Himself known. We keep going because He keeps coming.
This changes how we approach spiritual growth. It removes the pressure to perform or prove ourselves. It invites us into something gentler and truer: a rhythm of showing up, trusting, and watching for Him.
Some days, that will feel rich and alive. Other days, it will feel ordinary, even dry. But both kinds of days matter. Both are part of pressing on. And both are held within the promise that God will come, steady as the sunrise, refreshing as the rain.
Today’s Practice
Set aside a few quiet minutes today to simply acknowledge God’s presence. You don’t need to say much or feel anything in particular. Just show up. Speak His name. Thank Him for one way He has been faithful. And trust that, like the sun, He will rise again tomorrow.
