Verse of the Day
Luke 13:6-9
Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any. So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’ ‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.'”
This parable speaks to a quiet fear many of us carry. We look at our lives and wonder if we have produced the fruit we hoped for. Maybe you have spent years trying to grow in faith, to change a habit, to serve well, to love better. And still, you feel stuck. You wonder if God is disappointed. You wonder if your season is over before it truly began.
But this parable does not end with judgment. It ends with mercy, patience, and one more season to grow.
Quiet Prayer
Father, thank You for Your patience with me. When I look at my life and see what has not yet grown, help me to trust that You are still at work. Give me the humility to receive another season of tending, even when I feel ashamed of how long it has taken. I trust that You are not done with me. Amen.
Devotional Reflection
The fig tree in this parable had been planted with purpose. It was supposed to bear fruit. And for three years, the owner came looking for something to show for it. But there was nothing. The tree was not producing what it was made to produce.
You may relate to that fig tree. Perhaps you have been planted in a season, a calling, a ministry, a relationship, and you expected growth by now. You thought you would be further along. You thought your faith would feel stronger, your heart more surrendered, your life more fruitful. Instead, you feel unproductive. You feel like you are taking up space without giving much back.
The vineyard owner’s response makes sense. Why keep investing in something that is not growing? Why waste the soil, the water, the sunlight? It is a fair question. And if this parable ended there, it would confirm your fear that God might be done with you.
But the keeper of the vineyard speaks up. He does not excuse the tree’s lack of fruit. He does not pretend it is producing when it is not. Instead, he asks for one more year. He offers to dig around it, loosen the soil, and fertilize it. He commits to more work, more care, more attention. He believes there is still hope.
This is the heart of God toward you. He sees where you are. He knows what has not yet grown. And instead of cutting you down, He gives you another season. He tends to the soil around your heart. He digs up what is hard and compacted. He adds what you need to grow. He does not give up on you.
You may feel like you have wasted time. You may feel like you should have more to show for the years you have been walking with God. But this parable reminds you that God is not in a hurry to discard you. He is patient. He is hopeful. He is still working.
The keeper of the vineyard does not just leave the tree alone. He actively tends to it. This is not passive patience. This is intentional care. God is not ignoring your lack of growth. He is addressing it. He is creating the conditions for fruitfulness. He is digging around the places in your life that have become hard or stuck. He is adding what you need, even if you cannot see it yet.
This parable also speaks to the reality that growth takes time. The fig tree was not expected to produce fruit overnight. It was given a full year. A season. A span of time to respond to the care it was receiving. You are in that season now. You are not being rushed. You are being tended.
And here is the grace in this passage: the parable does not tell us what happened next. We do not know if the tree bore fruit or not. What we do know is that it was given a chance. It was not cut down prematurely. It was not discarded in its weakness. It was given time, attention, and hope.
That is where you are today. You are not too late. You are not beyond hope. You are in a season of being tended. God has not given up on you. He is still at work, even when you cannot see the fruit yet.
So if you feel unproductive, if you feel like your life is not measuring up, receive this as a word of mercy. You are still here. You are still being cared for. You are still being given time to grow. That is not a small thing. That is grace.
Today’s Practice
Ask God to show you one area of your life where He is still at work, even if you cannot see the fruit yet. Write it down. Thank Him for His patience and for giving you another season to grow. Trust that He is tending to what needs attention, and rest in the knowledge that He has not given up on you.
