Luke 24:3
But when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
The women came expecting death. They brought spices to honor a body. They had watched Him die, seen where He was laid, and prepared themselves for the somber work of mourning. But when they stepped into the tomb that morning, everything changed. The body they came to anoint was gone. The empty tomb stood as quiet proof that death had lost its hold.
Breakthrough begins here. Not in certainty, but in the unexpected absence of what we thought was final.
Quiet Prayer
Lord, I come to You carrying the weight of what feels finished. I have mourned losses, accepted endings, and prepared myself to live with what cannot be changed. But You are the God of the empty tomb. You are not bound by what I think is final. Open my eyes to see that Your presence changes everything. Help me trust that even when I expect to find death, You are already at work bringing life. Amen.
Devotional Reflection
The empty tomb was not what anyone expected. The women arrived in the early morning darkness with one purpose: to care for a dead body. They had no reason to believe anything else was possible. Friday’s crucifixion had been brutal and public. Saturday’s silence had been long and heavy. Sunday morning felt like the beginning of grief they would carry for the rest of their lives.
But the empty tomb changed the story completely.
When they entered and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus, they were not immediately filled with joy. Luke tells us they were perplexed, troubled, uncertain. They had come expecting one reality and found something entirely different. The absence they encountered was not the absence of hope. It was the presence of something greater than they had imagined.
You may be in a season where you have accepted certain things as finished. A relationship that cannot be restored. A dream that will not come to pass. A wound that feels too deep to heal. You have done the hard work of letting go, of releasing what you thought your life would hold. You have come to the tomb prepared to honor what is gone.
But God is not limited by your expectations. He is not confined to the endings you have named. The empty tomb reminds us that what looks final to us is not final to Him. Where we see death, He brings resurrection. Where we expect to find loss, He is already at work creating something new.
This does not mean every loss is reversed in the way we hope. It does not mean every story ends the way we planned. But it does mean that God’s power to bring life out of death is greater than anything we have surrendered to the grave. The empty tomb is proof that nothing is beyond His ability to redeem, restore, and make new.
The women came with spices and left with a message. They came in sorrow and left as witnesses. They came expecting to serve a memory and instead encountered the living Lord. The empty tomb turned their mourning into mission, their grief into proclamation.
The same is true for you. The places in your life where you have buried hope, where you have sealed the stone and walked away, are the very places God may be preparing for breakthrough. Not because you have done everything right, but because He is faithful. Not because you have enough faith, but because He has enough power.
When you encounter the empty tomb in your own life, it may feel disorienting at first. It may raise more questions than answers. The women did not immediately understand what had happened. But they did not stay in confusion. They listened to the angels. They remembered His words. They returned to the others and told what they had seen.
This is the posture of breakthrough. You do not need to understand everything. You do not need to have all the answers. You simply need to be willing to believe that the God who raised Jesus from the dead is still at work in the places you thought were finished.
Today’s Practice
Bring one area of loss or disappointment to God today and ask Him to help you see it through the truth of the empty tomb. You do not need to force hope or manufacture faith. Simply acknowledge that the same power that raised Jesus is at work in your life, even in the places that feel most final.
