“He replied, ‘Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.'”
Devotional Reflection
Before we rush to apply this promise, it is good simply to sit with it.
Jesus takes something very familiar and very small, a mustard seed, and holds it up as a picture of what He can work with. Not great, impressive faith. Not polished, certain, unshakable faith. Just faith as small as a mustard seed.
A mustard seed is tiny. You can balance it on the tip of a finger and almost miss it. Jesus does not shame His disciples for needing only a little. Instead, He reveals that the power is not in the size of their faith, but in the One their faith rests upon.
You may read this verse with mixed feelings. Perhaps you think, My faith feels smaller than small. I don’t see any mountains moving. There can be quiet disappointment here, or old confusion. If God says that mustard-seed faith can move mountains, why do some mountains in our lives seem to stay where they are?
Sometimes we picture this verse as if faith were a spiritual crowbar, prying life into the shape we want. But Jesus is not handing us a tool to control outcomes. He is inviting us into a relationship of trust with Him, the Lord over every mountain.
Picture a child holding a parent’s hand to step over a curb. The child’s grip may be weak and uncertain. What really keeps her safe is not how tightly she holds on, but how firmly the parent holds her. In much the same way, your “mustard seed” of trust rests inside God’s strong, steady hold on you.
The “mountains” you face may not be physical obstacles. They may be a lingering illness, a strained relationship, a fear that wakes you at 3 a.m., a decision you cannot see your way through. From where you stand, these feel fixed and immovable.
Jesus does not deny that the mountains are real. He simply reminds you that they are not bigger than He is. Faith, even when it is trembling and small, says, “Lord, I can’t move this, but You are here with me. Do what is right in Your wisdom and love.”
This kind of faith is not loud. It will not always feel heroic. It may sound more like, “Help me, Lord,” or, “I believe; help my unbelief.” Yet Jesus takes that small turning of the heart toward Him and calls it enough.
We often measure our faith by our emotions, how strong, confident, or peaceful we feel. But Scripture points us away from self-measurement and back toward the object of our faith: Christ Himself. He is the One who speaks to storms, who heals with a word, who walks out of the grave. He does not need you to be impressive; He invites you simply to be honest and willing.
Mustard-seed faith may look like praying again for the child you are worried about, even when you feel weary. It may look like opening your Bible when your mind feels scattered, and asking God to speak into the clutter. It may look like telling a trusted friend, “I’m struggling; will you pray with me?”
In God’s hands, these small acts are not small at all. They are seeds. We cannot always see what He is doing beneath the soil of our everyday lives, but He assures us that nothing is wasted when we entrust it to Him.
One day, you may look back and see that the “mountain” did move, perhaps in a different way than you expected. A heart softened. A strength given that you did not have before. A new path opened that you couldn’t have imagined. And sometimes the mountain remains, but your heart is steadied, and you find you are no longer standing there alone.
Jesus’ words in this verse are not meant to pressure you into performing spiritually. They are meant to comfort you: your small faith, placed in a great Savior, is enough for today.
Quiet Prayer
Lord Jesus, You see how small my faith sometimes feels. Thank You for welcoming even my mustard-seed trust and holding me steady when I am weak. I bring the mountains in my life before You now and place them in Your wise and loving hands. Strengthen my faith not so that I can control outcomes, but so that I can rest more deeply in who You are. Keep my heart quiet before You today.
