Romans 9:4
They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises.
Paul writes these words with both tenderness and weight. He is speaking about his own people, the Israelites, and listing the spiritual inheritance they were given. But beneath this list lies a truth that reaches beyond one nation: God’s faithfulness is not dependent on our ability to recognize it or respond to it perfectly.
This verse sits in the middle of Paul’s deep struggle. He loves his people. He grieves their unbelief. Yet even in that grief, he does not erase what God has done. He names it clearly. Adoption. Glory. Covenants. Law. Worship. Promises. These were not earned. They were given.
And that same pattern of unearned grace applies to you.

Father, thank You for choosing to love me before I could love You back. Thank You for giving me what I could never earn or deserve. Help me to receive Your kindness without striving, and to trust that Your faithfulness does not waver even when mine does. Teach me to rest in what You have already done, not in what I think I must prove. Amen.
Devotional Reflection
Romans 9:4 offers a window into something many of us wrestle with during seasons of testing or trials. We begin to wonder if God’s love is conditional. We start asking whether we have done enough, believed hard enough, or proven ourselves faithful enough to remain in His care.
Paul’s words challenge that kind of thinking. He is writing about a people who were given adoption, glory, covenants, law, worship, and promises not because they were better than others, but because God chose to love them. Their identity was rooted in God’s decision, not their performance.
The same is true for you if you are in Christ. You did not earn your place in God’s family. You were adopted. You did not generate His glory. It was revealed to you. You did not write the terms of relationship with Him. He made covenants with you and kept them. You were given access to worship, promises, and grace long before you understood what any of it meant.
This matters deeply when you are going through something hard. Trials have a way of making us question whether we are still loved, still chosen, still held. We look at our doubts, our failures, our weak prayers, and we wonder if we have disqualified ourselves. But this verse reminds us that God’s gifts were never based on our qualifications in the first place.
Think of it this way. A child does not earn their place in a family by behaving well. They belong because they were chosen. Their belonging is the foundation, not the reward. And it is that secure belonging that actually makes obedience, trust, and love possible.
You do not need to perform your way into God’s presence. You have already been brought in. The covenants have already been made. The promises have already been spoken. The access to Him has already been given through Christ. Your struggle does not undo that. Your confusion does not cancel it. Your weakness does not disqualify you.
Paul knew this truth personally. He had been a persecutor of the church before God stopped him on the road to Damascus. He had no claim to righteousness. Yet God chose him, called him, and used him powerfully. Paul’s entire ministry flowed from the reality that grace comes first, and everything else follows.
When you are in a season of testing or trials, it is easy to start measuring yourself. You compare your faith to others. You wonder why you are not stronger, calmer, more certain. You start thinking that maybe you are not good enough for God to stay close.
But Romans 9:4 pulls you back to the truth. God’s faithfulness is not a response to yours. His love is not a reward for your strength. He gave you adoption, access, and promises because that is who He is, not because of who you are on your best day.
This does not mean your choices do not matter. They do. But they matter because you are loved, not in order to be loved. You obey because you belong. You trust because you have been given promises. You worship because you have been brought near.
Let this be the foundation you return to when everything else feels uncertain. You were chosen. You were brought in. You were given what you could never earn. And nothing about your current trial changes that.

Take a few moments to write down or quietly name the spiritual gifts God has already given you: forgiveness, access to Him through prayer, the Holy Spirit, His Word, the promise of His presence. Let this list remind you that your relationship with Him is not fragile or conditional. It is held by His faithfulness, not yours.
